Free AI Chatbots: The Real Limits Behind Each Free Tier
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity and more. What each free tier gives you, where it throttles, and what the paid tier costs.
General assistants are the tools most people meet first, and their free tiers change fastest. Message caps move, models are rotated in and out, and at least one product in this list renamed itself entirely and rewrote its limits at the same time.
Free assistants are usually usable for real work, which is not true in most other categories. The constraint is rarely a hard wall and more often a quiet downgrade: a weaker model, a shorter context, or a cap that resets in a way designed to be hard to count.
All 10 reports in this category
- ChatGPT Free Has No Message Limit Any More. Three Caps Remain.. Every guide still quotes a message cap that OpenAI removed. The limit that actually stops a free account now is three file uploads a day.
- Claude Free Has No Message Limit Either. It Has a Five-Hour Clock.. There is no number to check against, because Anthropic stopped publishing one. What you get instead is a rolling five-hour clock, and that changes when you should write.
- DeepSeek Chat Is Free With No Paid Tier to Sell You. There is no DeepSeek Plus. The consumer app costs nothing, there is no upgrade to buy, and the only bill is the API, which you can avoid entirely by self-hosting.
- Gemini's Free Plan Lost Flash and Pro on October 9. The free Gemini app now defaults to Flash-Lite. The change landed on October 9 and most of the guides online still describe the old tiers.
- Grok Free Has No Published Limit. xAI Calls It Generous.. Every guide says 10 messages per two hours. xAI's own pricing page says generous limits and prints no number. The paid tiers share one weekly pool.
- Microsoft Copilot Is Free. Office Integration Is Not.. Microsoft does not meter Copilot chat. Think Deeper is free and unlimited, and paying moves you up the queue rather than raising a ceiling.
- Mistral Free Is Vibe Now, and Its Limits Have No Number. Mistral renamed Le Chat to Vibe and gave the free plan $10 a month of API credit, which is the most useful thing on it. The message limit stays unpublished.
- Perplexity Free: 3 Pro Searches a Day, 1 Report a Month. Free Perplexity is two allowances on two different clocks. Three Pro Searches reset daily, one Research report resets monthly, and basic search sits outside both.
- Poe Cut Its Free Allowance 90 Percent and Never Said So. A single Claude Opus message costs more than a free day. Poe's 300 points cover roughly 15 to 30 short messages, and one frontier question can use all of them.
- You.com Free Gives 100 Searches a Day, to Developers. You.com no longer publishes consumer pricing. Its public free tier is a hundred search API calls a day, which is a different product from the assistant it used to be.
How these were measured
Every report records the same fields: what the free plan includes, what it withholds, what the first paid tier costs, and the point at which paying starts to make sense. Figures are taken from the vendor's own pricing and documentation pages and carry the date they were checked. Plan terms change without notice, so treat each number as a dated snapshot.
