ChatGPT Pro 200 Loses Its Grandfathered Allowance on Thursday

The price does not move and the plan name does not change. The included usage drops anyway, and there is no purchase that restores it.

ChatGPT Pro 200 Loses Its Grandfathered Allowance on Thursday

ChatGPT's grandfathered Pro 200 allowance ends on 29 October 2026. Subscribers who held an active Pro 200 subscription at any point between 22 September 2026 and 10 a.m. Pacific Time on 29 September 2026 keep the larger included allowance until that date, and afterwards move to a lower allowance at the same $200 a month. OpenAI says the plan itself does not change and only affected accounts receive an email.1

This is the least dramatic kind of price rise and the easiest to miss. Nothing in the billing system changes. No line item moves. What changes is how much you get for the same money, starting on a Thursday, with no invoice to announce it.2

Pro 100$100Base allowanceNot included
Pro 200$200More than Pro 100Not included
Pro 500$500Highest of the threeIncluded

Prices measured on 27 October 2026. Vendor plan terms, allowances and prices change without notice, so treat every figure on this page as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent fact. Where a number here differs from the vendor's own pricing page, the vendor's page is correct and the figure above is simply older than it.

OpenAI describes the tiers only in comparative terms. Pro 200 includes more usage than Pro 100 and Pro 500 offers the highest included usage of the three. There is no published token count, request count or dollar figure for any of them, which means the reduction taking effect on Thursday cannot be sized from any official page. What is published is that it is happening and when.

What actually happens on 29 October

Eligible subscriptions keep the previous included allowance through 29 October 2026 while the subscription is active. After that date the subscription moves to the lower included usage allowance. The price stays at $200 a month. OpenAI states plainly that keeping the current allowance does not upgrade the plan or add Ultrafast features.

The eligibility window is narrow and slightly strange: an active Pro 200 subscription at any point from 22 September through 10 a.m. Pacific on 29 September. OpenAI's page now says Pro 200 is available for new subscriptions again, which implies there was a gap. Anyone who subscribed after that window is already on the lower allowance and has nothing to lose this week.

If you cancelled earlier and resubscribe on the same account, you still qualify provided you were active inside that window. Cancelling now does not accelerate anything either. Scheduling a cancellation does not end the subscription immediately, so access continues to the end of the current billing period, and cancelling does not protect the allowance, which was never conditional on not cancelling.

You cannot buy your way back to the old allowance

This is the part worth internalising before Thursday, because the first instinct on any AI plan is to top up. Credits do help with usage, and they do not restore the allowance.

Purchased credits are spent after included usage is exhausted, not instead of it, so they make a shortfall survivable rather than smaller. They also cover a limited set of features: Codex, ChatGPT Work, and the Word, Excel and PowerPoint integrations, with availability depending on plan and account. OpenAI says credits do not provide additional usage for every model or feature.

Support will not reset a limit either. OpenAI's help page says support cannot reset ChatGPT or Codex limits and can only investigate whether usage was counted incorrectly or whether access failed to return after a reset. There is no discretionary lever here, and no support conversation that restores a withdrawn allowance.

Pro 500 is the only route to Ultrafast

Ultrafast is available on Pro 500 and on no other Pro plan. It covers GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol and is selectable in the model picker. At launch, buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not unlock it, so this is not a feature you can meter your way into. It is a $500 subscription or nothing.

For most people that settles the question. Pro 500 costs two and a half times Pro 200, which is a large multiple to pay for a speed setting on two models. It becomes rational only if latency on those specific models is the bottleneck in your day, and if it is, you already know.

What the meter actually charges

Included usage is consumed at different rates depending on how you invoke a model, and the multipliers compound the allowance cut rather than sitting beside it.

Fast mode uses the included allowance at 2.5 times the Standard rate for the same model. Ultrafast, on Pro 500, uses it at 8 times the Standard rate for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. Once the allowance is gone, purchased credits cover Ultrafast at 6 times the Standard credit rate.

OpenAI frames these as allowance consumption rates rather than guarantees of speed, which is an honest distinction. A single Ultrafast request on Pro 500 costs the allowance position of eight standard requests. A habit is more expensive than a decision.

Who this hits hardest

The reduction is proportional, so it is felt most by anyone who was running near the top of the old allowance. Three patterns fit that description: long Codex sessions that refactor across many files, deep research runs that read large corpora, and anyone who left Fast mode on permanently because the speed was worth it.

A casual Pro 200 subscriber who opens ChatGPT a few times a day is unlikely to notice. OpenAI says only affected users will be emailed, and the affected group is the one whose usage tracks the ceiling.

The three moves worth considering before Thursday

Do nothing. For light users this is correct. The plan keeps working, the price does not change, and the allowance that remains may still be more than you spend in a month.

Drop to Pro 100. If your usage is modest enough that the cut will not bite, halving the bill for a smaller allowance is the rational move, since Pro 200's advantage over Pro 100 was precisely the usage you have just been told is shrinking. This is the option most affected subscribers overlook.

Move the work elsewhere. For heavy agentic coding, the cost of Pro 200 plus credits can exceed a subscription that includes more headroom at a different vendor. Claude and Gemini both meter usage differently, and neither has announced a comparable mid-subscription cut this week, though both changed their own model access in October.

What OpenAI has not published

No figure for the old allowance. No figure for the new one. No statement of how large the reduction is as a percentage, whether it differs by model, or whether it applies uniformly to chat, Codex and deep research.

That gap is the honest limit of this article, and it is not a gap that a tracker or an aggregator can fill reliably, because the numbers were never public to begin with. Anyone quoting a specific token count for either allowance is inferring it from their own usage rather than reading it from OpenAI.

What can be said with confidence is the shape of the thing: same price, less usage, fixed date, no purchase that reverses it.

How it compares

Against ChatGPT's own free plan, the Pro tiers buy model access and headroom rather than features, since the free plan lost its message cap in August 2026 and kept its attachment and model limits. Against Cursor's repriced ladder, the difference is one of style: Cursor raised the entry price and named new tiers, while OpenAI kept the price and silently changed the quantity.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to my ChatGPT Pro 200 on 29 October 2026?
Your included usage drops to a lower allowance. The price stays $200 a month and the plan remains Pro 200.

Will the old allowance come back if I cancel and resubscribe?
No. Grandfathering runs to 29 October 2026 and no action extends it. Resubscribing on the same account keeps it only until that date.

Does staying subscribed preserve my allowance?
It preserves it until 29 October 2026 and no further. The reduction applies to every grandfathered subscription on that date.

Can I buy credits to get the old allowance back?
No. Credits cover eligible usage after the included allowance is spent. They do not restore the allowance or unlock Ultrafast on Pro 100 or Pro 200.

Is Ultrafast available on Pro 200?
No. It is available only on Pro 500, which costs $500 a month. Buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not unlock it.

Will I be told individually?
Only affected users receive an email with details. Your current usage against your allowance is visible in Settings under Usage.
