Gemini's Free Plan Lost Flash and Pro on October 9
The free Gemini app now defaults to Flash-Lite. The change landed on October 9 and most of the guides online still describe the old tiers.
Since October 9, 2026 the free Gemini app has access to Flash-Lite only. Flash moved to Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month, and Pro moved to AI Pro at $19.99. Nothing was removed from the free account except the choice of model: image generation, voice, Deep Research, Canvas and Gems all still work.
The 15 GB of storage on a free account also stays. What changed is the quality of the answer, not the feature list.
If you read a guide that quotes five Pro prompts a day, it is describing a tier that stopped existing months before this one did. That quota was replaced by compute-based limits on May 17, 2026, and the model access changed again in October.
What changed for free users on October 9
The Gemini app now opens in an Auto mode that routes most prompts to Flash-Lite. With smart model selection turned off, every reply comes from Flash-Lite. There is no setting on a free account that gets Flash or Pro back.
| Plan | US price per month | Models available | Context window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Flash-Lite only | 32K tokens |
| Google AI Plus | $4.99 | Flash-Lite and Flash | 128K tokens |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99 | Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro, Deep Think | 1M tokens |
| Google AI Ultra | $99.99 or $199.99 | Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro, Deep Think | 1M tokens |
Google AI Plus subscribers keep Flash and lose Pro on a date the company emails to each account individually. If you are on Plus, check your own notification rather than a support page, because the page and the email do not always agree yet.
What the free plan still gives you
The model downgrade is real, and it is smaller than the reaction to it suggests. Flash-Lite is weak at long-context reasoning and it is fine at the things most free users actually do.
Image generation and editing still run on the free account. Voice conversations still work. Deep Research is still available, which for a student or a researcher is the most valuable item on the list and the one least affected by which model answers. NotebookLM, which is a separate product and free in its own right, is not touched by any of this.
The 32K context window is the limit that bites first, and it bites quietly. Paste a long document, get a summary of the first part of it, and nothing warns you that the rest was dropped.
When the free plan stops being enough
Free stops working the moment your task needs more than roughly 25,000 words of context, or needs the reasoning quality of Pro on a multi-step problem. Below that line, paying changes the speed of the answer rather than whether you get one.
| Your task | Free plan verdict |
|---|---|
| Drafting email, summarising an article, rewriting a paragraph | Enough. Flash-Lite is competent here |
| Extracting structured data from short PDFs | Enough, if the PDF is under about 40 pages |
| Debugging a 600-line file you paste in whole | Not enough. 32K context drops part of the file |
| Multi-step reasoning over a research pack | Not enough. Use NotebookLM or pay for Pro |
| Anything you will ship to a client unedited | Marginal. Budget a review pass |
Is Google AI Plus at $4.99 worth it?
Mostly no, and that is an unusual answer for a $5 tier. AI Plus doubles the usage allowance and raises the context window from 32K to 128K, which fixes the document problem. What it does not give you is the Pro model, and Pro is the reason most people consider paying at all.
If you need better answers, AI Pro at $19.99 is the tier that delivers them. If you need a cheaper assistant and can live without Gemini specifically, the free tiers of ChatGPT and Claude are both stronger than Flash-Lite on writing, and DeepSeek's free tier is stronger on code. Moving to another free product beats moving up a paid tier at $4.99.
What to do instead of paying
Build a small stack instead of looking for one model that does everything. Three free products cover what the old free Gemini tier covered, and they still cost nothing.
- NotebookLM for anything involving uploaded documents. It cites only your sources, it is free, and it has no context ceiling you will reach with a normal research pack.
- Perplexity free for research that needs live citations, with five Pro searches a day and unlimited standard ones.
- Gemini free for image generation, voice and anything inside Google Workspace, which is what Flash-Lite handles adequately.
The cost of that arrangement is clipboard work between three tabs. The saving is $19.99 a month, and the answer quality on document-heavy tasks is better than the paid tier it replaces.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still use Gemini Pro for free?
No. Pro access requires AI Pro at $19.99 a month. Free accounts were limited to Flash-Lite from October 9, 2026, and AI Plus accounts lose Pro on a date Google emails to them.
Does the free plan still generate images?
Yes. Image generation and editing still work on a free account, along with voice, Deep Research, Canvas and Gems.
How many prompts a day do I get?
Google no longer publishes a prompt count. Since May 17, 2026 the limit is compute-based, refreshing every five hours inside a weekly cap, and prompt complexity and conversation length both spend it.
Is the Gemini API free tier the same as the app?
No. The API has separate quotas, and Flash-Lite models carry far more daily requests than the Flash models do. Check the API rate table rather than the app support page.
