ChatGPT Free Has No Message Limit Any More. Three Caps Remain.
Every guide still quotes a message cap that OpenAI removed. The limit that actually stops a free account now is three file uploads a day.
ChatGPT's free plan no longer has a message cap on text chat. Since August 2026, free accounts get unlimited everyday text conversations on the Luna model, subject to abuse safeguards. Three meters still run: file uploads at 3 per day, image generation, and voice, each with limits OpenAI does not publish.1
This replaced a cap that had been in place for years. Free accounts used to get roughly ten messages every five hours, which is the number still printed in most articles about the free tier. That limit is gone.
What replaced it is a different kind of constraint. Instead of counting what you type, OpenAI meters what you attach. If you use ChatGPT as a chat window, the free plan is now effectively unlimited. If you use it as a document tool, you will hit a wall on the first afternoon.2
What the free plan includes now
| Free | Paid tiers | |
|---|---|---|
| Text chat | Unlimited, abuse safeguards apply | Unlimited |
| Default model | Luna, the smallest of the current family | Larger reasoning models |
| Reasoning effort | Think button, on Luna | Adjustable on higher tiers |
| File uploads | 3 per day | Higher, not published |
| Image generation | Limited, slower | Higher |
| Voice | Limited | Extended |
| Card required | No | Yes |
The one number OpenAI states plainly for free accounts is three file uploads per day. Everything else is metered but not published, and the product tells you when you reach it.
Three uploads a day is the real cap
Three is fewer than it sounds. A single PDF you want summarised is one. Extracting a table from a spreadsheet is another. Asking a follow-up question about the same document is usually a third.
Anyone who works by feeding documents into a chat window will be blocked before lunch. Anyone who types their questions will never see the limit at all.
| How you use it | Hits a wall |
|---|---|
| Typing questions and thinking out loud | Never. Text is unlimited |
| Summarising one PDF a day | Almost never |
| Reviewing a contract across several messages | Within the first session |
| Batch-processing documents | Immediately, it is not built for this |
| Generating images for a post | Quickly, the image meter is tighter |
Why the old numbers are still everywhere
Because the change was quiet relative to its size. OpenAI announced unlimited text chats on 6 August 2026 and rolled it out over the following week, and it was framed as removing a restriction rather than as a new product.
The downstream effect is that a large share of published material now describes a product that no longer exists. If a guide tells you the free plan gives ten messages per five hours, or twenty-five, or any other count, it is describing the pre-August arrangement. There is nothing to count on text any more.
One thing worth watching rather than trusting: the name of the free model has moved more than once, and sources published in October 2026 disagree on whether the current default is the 5.6 generation or the 6 generation of Luna. The tier structure is what matters. Free accounts get the smallest current model, not the flagship.
What free does not give you
The reasoning models. Free users get a Think button that spends more effort on a question, but it still runs on Luna rather than on the larger models the paid tiers provide. For most everyday questions that difference is invisible. For multi-step analysis it is not.
Voice, image generation and file handling are all present but throttled to a degree OpenAI does not quantify. The practical advice is to test the one you need rather than assume a number.
When the free plan is enough
Writing, editing, explaining, brainstorming, asking questions about things you can paste in as text. That is now genuinely unlimited, and it is the majority of what people use these tools for.
It is also enough if your document work is occasional: one PDF, one question, done. The three-upload cap only bites when you make it a daily habit.
For one place to reach several models at once, Poe bundles them under a daily points allowance.
When it stops being enough
When documents are the workflow rather than an occasional attachment. Three uploads a day is below the threshold for contract review, research synthesis, or anything involving a batch of files.
For that work, the comparison worth making is not ChatGPT plus against ChatGPT free. It is against tools whose free tiers meter differently. Claude meters on a rolling five-hour window instead of a daily count, Gemini's free plan lost its better models in October 2026, and Notion AI gives a fixed lifetime allowance rather than a daily one.
If your document work is really writing work, Grammarly and QuillBot meter per month and per pass instead, which suits long editing sessions better.
Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT free unlimited now?
Text chat is unlimited on the free plan, subject to abuse safeguards. Files, images and voice still have limits.
How many messages per day on free?
There is no text message count any more. The old cap of about ten messages per five hours was removed in August 2026.
How many files can you upload free?
Three per day. This is the one daily limit OpenAI states explicitly for free accounts.
Does free ChatGPT have ads?
Depends on your region and rollout. Free accounts have been the tier where advertising and lower peak-hour priority are applied.
Can free users use the reasoning models?
No. Free accounts get a Think option that spends more effort, but it runs on the small model, not the flagship reasoning models.
Free-tier structure verified against OpenAI's Free Tier FAQ and pricing page on 20 October 2026. Sources disagree on the exact model name in October 2026; the tier structure described here is consistent across them. Limits change without notice.
