Perplexity Free: 3 Pro Searches a Day, 1 Report a Month

Free Perplexity is two allowances on two different clocks. Three Pro Searches reset daily, one Research report resets monthly, and basic search sits outside both.

Perplexity's free plan gives three Pro Searches a day and one Research query a month, with basic search effectively unlimited behind them. Pro is $20 a month or $200 a year and replaces both with weekly and monthly limits that Perplexity describes only as average use, without publishing a number.1

That split is the whole plan and most summaries collapse it. Three a day sounds like ninety a month. The Research allowance is one. They are separate buckets on separate clocks, so spending a Pro Search does not touch Research and running out of Pro Searches does not lock basic search.

The second detail is the one that matters for planning: Perplexity prints exact numbers for Free and for Enterprise, and refuses for everything in between. Paying does not buy you a disclosed allowance, it buys you a vaguer one.

Basic search being close to unmetered is genuinely generous and often overlooked. The free plan is a usable answer engine. It is the reasoning modes that are rationed.

Two clocks, and only one of them resets fast

Three Pro Searches a day is a usable rhythm for a working day. You get a fresh three tomorrow whether or not you used them, and nothing accumulates.

One Research query a month is a different instrument entirely. Research runs a long, multi-step investigation and returns a report, and on the free plan you get one of those per calendar month. If you are the sort of person who needs that output, need is a monthly event and you will hit it inside the first week.

Perplexity's own help centre lists these as separate allowances rather than a combined total, which is the correct way to read it. A post that adds them together is producing a number that does not exist.

The free plan has no model picker

On Free, Perplexity chooses the model and you do not. Pro adds the picker and access to advanced models.

For everyday questions that is invisible, because the route the system picks is usually sensible. It matters when you have a reason to want a particular model, which is exactly when free plans stop being adequate. Compare Claude's free tier, which fixes you to specific models rather than an opaque router, or ChatGPT, which gives Free a named default model.

What is genuinely free here

Citations with links to every source, which remains the reason to use Perplexity over a general chatbot. Every claim in an answer carries a number you can click, and on a free plan that behaviour is identical to the paid one.

Comet, the browser, is also downloadable on Free. Connectors and memory work on Free. The things that are gated are computing, not access.

When the free plan is enough

Looking things up with sources attached, checking a claim against the web, comparing a handful of products, drafting a short answer you then verify yourself. Three Pro Searches is roughly three careful questions a day, which covers most people.

It is also fine as a research companion to a writing tool. Draft in Jasper or Copy.ai, verify in Perplexity, and the free tiers of all three are enough to ship light work.

When it stops being enough

The first time you need a second Research report in the same month. That is the ceiling, and it arrives well before the Pro Search limit does.

The second is file analysis. Free file handling is limited and Pro lifts it to 50 files per project, which is the difference between reading one document and working through a folder of them.

At $20 a month, Pro is priced against Gemini's $19.99 AI Pro and ChatGPT Plus at $20. What you are buying is not a bigger allowance but an unpublished one, so the honest advice is to run the free plan until a specific task fails rather than upgrading to find out what the limits are.

Frequently asked questions

How many free Pro Searches does Perplexity give?
Three per day. They reset daily and do not roll over.

Is Deep Research free on Perplexity?
One query per month on the free plan. Pro and above get a monthly allowance that Perplexity does not quantify.

Can I use Perplexity free without an account?
Basic search works without signing in. Pro Searches and Research need an account.

Does the free plan let me choose an AI model?
No. Model selection is automatic on Free and becomes a manual picker on Pro.

What happens when I use all three Pro Searches?
They stop until the next day. Basic search keeps working, because it sits outside the Pro allowance.

Free-plan allowances, feature gates and pricing verified against Perplexity's help centre plan comparison and its pricing page on 20 October 2026. Third-party guides quoting five Pro Searches a day are repeating a figure the vendor no longer publishes.
