Mistral Free Is Vibe Now, and Its Limits Have No Number

Mistral renamed Le Chat to Vibe and gave the free plan $10 a month of API credit, which is the most useful thing on it. The message limit stays unpublished.

Mistral renamed Le Chat to Vibe on 28 May 2026, same account and address. The free plan includes its models on web and mobile, image generation, a hundred or more connectors, five scheduled tasks and $10 a month of API credit, with message and search limits left unpublished. Pro is $14.99 a month.1

The API credit is the part nobody mentions and the most valuable thing on the free tier. Ten dollars a month of metered API access, included with a free chat account, is a real developer allowance and it renews. Most free tiers in this category give you a chat box and nothing else.

Everything else is described in multiples. Pro gets up to six times the free message allowance, five times the searches and forty times the image generations. Multipliers of an unpublished number are not a specification.

The connectors row is genuinely surprising. A hundred or more integrations on the free plan is the broadest free connector offer in this category, ahead of what several paid tiers elsewhere include.

Ten dollars of API credit is the real free tier

Mistral's paid chat plans have bundled API credit since 2026, and the free plan gets $10 a month of it. At Mistral's rates that is a meaningful volume of tokens, and it is metered against your own usage rather than a message count.

This is the only free tier in this series where you can point a script at the vendor and pay nothing for a recurring allowance. DeepSeek's API is cheaper per token but has no free quota, and Perplexity does not include API access on Free at all.

Read the boundary carefully. The Pro subscription does not cover API usage beyond the bundled credit. Chat billing and API billing are separate systems with separate balances, which trips up people who assume a $14.99 subscription means unmetered calls.

The rename matters more than it sounds

Vibe is not Le Chat with a new label. Mistral describes it as one agent across chat, documents and code, and the roadmap is convergence with its coding tooling. Free gets limited coding sessions, which means the free tier now reaches into the terminal.

For anyone who followed a guide written before June 2026, the product has moved under them. Searches for Le Chat pricing increasingly land on pages describing Vibe, and the plan structure changed with the name.

No published message count, and no way to derive one

Third-party estimates put the free cap around 20 to 25 messages a day, and some put it at 150. The spread is a factor of seven, which tells you nobody has measured it reliably and Mistral is not helping.

What can be said is that Pro is defined as up to six times whatever the free number is, so the ratio is published and the base is not. Compare Copilot, which also withholds the count but at least does not meter at all, or ChatGPT, which removed the text cap entirely in August 2026.

European hosting is an actual differentiator

Mistral is a French company and hosts in the EU, which matters for anyone with data residency requirements. Pro adds a telemetry-free mode where prompts are not used for training, and that combination is not available from the US providers at this price.

For a European team that cannot send data outside the bloc, the free tier is already compliant at the hosting level even before the paid plan adds the training opt-out.

When the free plan is enough

General chat, summarising a document, image generation for a slide, and light scripting against the included API credit. The connector breadth means a free account can already reach a useful set of external services.

It is also the sensible first stop for anyone weighing Gemini or Claude who needs to know where the data is stored, because that question has a clear answer here.

When it stops being enough

When you need all-day coding in the CLI and IDE, which is the clearest line between Free and Pro. Limited coding sessions on Free means the agent stops partway through real work.

Or when the message cap bites and you cannot tell how close you are, because there is no counter and no published number. At $14.99, Pro is cheaper than most in this category, and the student rate at $5.99 for up to twelve months is the cheapest paid AI assistant subscription covered in this series.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mistral Le Chat still free?
Yes. Le Chat was renamed Vibe on 28 May 2026 and the free plan continues at $0 with the same account.

How many free messages does Mistral Vibe give?
Mistral does not publish a number. It describes the free allowance as limited and defines Pro as up to six times the free message allowance.

What is the $10 API credit on the free plan?
A monthly allowance of Mistral API usage included with the free chat account. It renews monthly and is separate from any subscription billing.

Is Mistral Vibe Pro the same as API access?
No. The subscription and the API are billed separately. Pro includes $30 a month of API credit, and usage beyond that is charged at API rates.

Does the free plan use my data for training?
The telemetry-free mode is a Pro feature. Mistral hosts in the EU, but excluding prompts from training requires the paid plan.

Plan contents, multipliers, API credit and pricing verified against Mistral's pricing page on 20 October 2026. Mistral publishes no numeric message or search allowance for the free plan, so third-party figures vary widely and none is vendor-confirmed.
