Free Developer Tools: What the Free Tiers Actually Meter
Eleven developer and infrastructure tools. CPU budgets, event caps, test limits and licence conditions on their free tiers.
Developer free tiers are the most technically specific on the site. They are metered in CPU milliseconds, error events, build minutes and licence clauses rather than in vague credits, which makes them easier to judge honestly and easier to overrun by accident.
The limits that bite here are the ones measured in time rather than volume: CPU budget per request, retention windows, and licence conditions like non-commercial use. None of them appear on a pricing table as a number you can budget against.
All 11 reports in this category
- Cloudflare Free Gives 10ms of CPU Per Request. Static hosting on Cloudflare is unmetered. The moment a request runs code, a 10-millisecond CPU budget applies, and it is tighter than most people expect.
- Cursor Free Has Limits Nobody Will Put a Number On. The 2,000 completions and 50 requests figures come from users, not from Cursor. The vendor's own pricing page says limited and stops there.
- GitHub Copilot Free: 2,000 Completions, 50 Chats a Month. Two separate meters, both monthly, and neither rolls over. The completion cap usually survives longer than the chat cap, and model choice is gone on Free.
- Linear Free Gives You 250 Issues. They Never Come Back.. Linear's free plan is not a monthly allowance. It is 250 issues for the life of the workspace, and when you reach it, new issues stop being accepted from every entry point.
- Postman Free Is One Person Now. Runs Are Unlimited.. Two things changed at once in March 2026: free dropped to one user, and collection runs became unlimited on every tier. Most guides still describe neither.
- Railway Has a Free Plan. It Is $1 a Month.. The trial is a one-time $5 credit for 30 days. What replaces it is a permanent free plan with $1 a month, which covers a very small service and nothing more.
- Sentry Free Drops Your Errors at 5,000. No Overage.. Sentry does not bill you for overages on the free plan. It stops accepting events until the month resets, which is a very different failure mode from a surprise invoice.
- Snyk's Free Plan Is 200 Tests a Month. Here Is What Counts as One.. Snyk's free plan counts scans, not repositories, and a monorepo burns through the allowance faster than almost anyone expects.
- Supabase Free Pauses Your Database When Nobody Visits. The quotas are generous for a free database. The thing that breaks demos is auto-pause: a week without traffic and your project sleeps until you wake it.
- Tailscale Free Is 6 People, Unlimited Devices, No Work. The free plan has no device limit at all. What it has is a licence condition: non-commercial use only. That one sentence decides most business deployments.
- Vercel Hobby Is Free Forever, Until Someone Notices. The quotas are generous enough that a side project never touches them. The limit that ends free Vercel accounts is a licence clause, not bandwidth.
How these were measured
Every report records the same fields: what the free plan includes, what it withholds, what the first paid tier costs, and the point at which paying starts to make sense. Figures are taken from the vendor's own pricing and documentation pages and carry the date they were checked. Plan terms change without notice, so treat each number as a dated snapshot.
