Free AI Writing Tools: What Each Free Plan Actually Allows
Ten AI writing tools, what their free plans allow, and where each one stops. Measured allowances and prices, dated.
AI writing is the category where the free tier is most often misdescribed. Half the tools here no longer have a free plan at all, and several of the ones that do meter your own prompt text against the same allowance as the output.
The honest summary is that free AI writing is a trial in most cases, not a plan. Rytr, Grammarly, QuillBot, Wordtune and Hemingway are the five that genuinely reset. The rest are fixed allowances that end, and Writesonic and Sudowrite no longer offer a free tier in the sense most guides mean.
All 10 reports in this category
- Copy.ai Free Is a One-Time 2,000 Words. Paid Now Starts at $29.. Every roundup still lists a Copy.ai free plan. What actually exists is 2,000 words with no reset date, which is a trial wearing a free plan's clothes.
- Grammarly's Free Plan Is 100 Prompts a Month. The Real Cap Is Lower.. The 100-prompt cap is the one everyone quotes. The document limit underneath it is the one that catches long-form writers.
- Hemingway Editor Is Free in the Browser. The Desktop App Is $19.99 Once.. This is the rare tool where the free tier is not a limit at all. The paid version buys convenience, and there is exactly one feature worth the money.
- Jasper Has No Free Plan. Seven Days, Then $59 a Seat.. The Creator plan is gone and so is any free tier. Seven days is enough to test brand voice, and that is the only thing worth testing.
- Notion AI Gives You 20 Responses. Total, Not Monthly.. Twenty AI responses for the lifetime of the workspace, and one category of AI feature that never touches the counter. That exemption is the whole story.
- QuillBot Free Rewrites 125 Words at a Time. That Is One Paragraph.. The 125-word cap is not a stingy limit. It is a structural one, and it decides what kind of writing this tool is for.
- Rytr Free Gives 10,000 Characters, and the New Plans Do Much More Than Write. Rytr's free tier is unchanged at 10,000 characters, but the paid plans are no longer simple writing upgrades. Lite removes the character cap, and everything above it is sold on research and outreach instead.
- Sudowrite Gives 10,000 Trial Credits. There Is No Free Plan.. Ten thousand credits with no expiry is a generous trial. It is still a trial, and it is sized for testing prose style rather than writing a book.
- Wordtune Free Gives 10 Rewrites a Day. That Is Ten Sentences.. Wordtune's free limit resets daily, not monthly. That single detail is the difference between a usable free tier and one that runs dry by mid-afternoon.
- Writesonic Dropped Its Free Plan. Entry Is Now $79.. Most guides still say 10,000 free words. Writesonic's own pricing page no longer offers a free tier at all, and the cheapest plan is $79 a month.
How these were measured
Every report records the same fields: what the free plan includes, what it withholds, what the first paid tier costs, and the point at which paying starts to make sense. Figures are taken from the vendor's own pricing and documentation pages and carry the date they were checked. Plan terms change without notice, so treat each number as a dated snapshot.
