Free Design Tools: Credits, Watermarks and Public Galleries
Ten design and image generation tools. What the free plans allow, what they watermark, and what they claim over your output.
Design free tiers hide their real cost in licensing rather than in limits. A generous daily credit allowance means little if everything you generate is published to a public gallery or licensed for reuse by the platform.
Check two things before the credit count: whether free output is public, and whether the platform claims rights over it. Those two lines decide whether a free tier is usable for client work, and they are rarely the headline.
All 10 reports in this category
- Adobe Express Free Has No AI Credits, Only Daily Generations. Every review quotes 25 credits a month. Adobe does not. The free plan runs on daily generations with no published number, plus two lifetime caps that never reset.
- Canva Free Gets 20 AI Uses a Month. The 200 Figure Is Wrong.. A 200-use figure circulates on dozens of sites and has no source at Canva. The real allowance is twenty, and the export restrictions matter more.
- Figma Starter: Three Files, Thirty Days, No Dev Mode. Drafts are unlimited, which is the escape hatch almost nobody mentions. The four limits that do bite are all about handoff.
- Ideogram Free: 10 or 30 Credits a Week, by Which Page. Ideogram's documentation says 30 credits a week. Its pricing page says 10. Both are live. The free plan also requires a Google, Apple or Microsoft sign-in to get any credits at all.
- Krea Free: 100 Units a Day, All the Models. A daily unit allowance that covers almost every model on the platform. The restriction is how far each unit goes, not which doors it opens.
- Leonardo Free Gives 150 Tokens a Day. That Is 12 Images. Fifteen hundred tokens a day sounds like 150 images. Leonardo prices by GPU load, so a real image costs several tokens and the daily allowance is gone in an afternoon.
- Penpot Free Has No File Limit, and One Cap That Matters. Penpot is the only design tool here whose free plan locks no features at all. The limits are storage, history and eight team members, and all three are quantitative.
- Photopea Is Free Because Ads Pay For It. That Is the Whole Limit.. Almost every free tier in design takes something away. Photopea takes nothing and shows you an advert instead, which is a different kind of price.
- Playground Free: 5 Images Every 3 Hours, 2 Downloads. A rolling window and a monthly cap run at the same time, and the smaller of the two is the one that actually decides your day.
- Recraft Free Makes Everything You Generate Public. The real limit is not the daily credit count. Everything generated on free is published to a public gallery, owned by Recraft, and barred from commercial use.
How these were measured
Every report records the same fields: what the free plan includes, what it withholds, what the first paid tier costs, and the point at which paying starts to make sense. Figures are taken from the vendor's own pricing and documentation pages and carry the date they were checked. Plan terms change without notice, so treat each number as a dated snapshot.
