Playground Free: 5 Images Every 3 Hours, 2 Downloads
A rolling window and a monthly cap run at the same time, and the smaller of the two is the one that actually decides your day.
Playground free costs $0 and allows up to 5 images every 3-hour rolling window on its own model, plus 3 monthly credits for premium models such as Nano Banana, GPT Image and Seedream. Downloads are capped at 2 per day and SVG export is paid only. The output carries a worldwide royalty-free commercial licence.1
Two different limits are stacked here and they behave nothing alike. The rolling window resets continuously. The premium credit allowance resets once a month.
What you can make is governed by the first. What you can keep is governed by the second, plus a download cap that is easy to miss.
What the free plan actually includes
| Free | Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $0 | $15/mo, $12 annual |
| Own-model generations | 5 per 3 hours | 75 per 3 hours |
| Premium model credits | 3 per month | 150 per month |
| Downloads | 2 per day | Unlimited |
| SVG export | No | Yes |
| Design files | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Upscaling and BG removal | No | Yes |
| Commercial licence | Yes | Yes |
Playground's own comparison table lists the free allowance as both "5 images" per 3-hour window and "3" monthly credits, and the footnote explains that the two apply to different model groups.
The rolling window
Five images every three hours works out to roughly 40 images a day if you keep returning, which is a real allowance for a free tier.
The window is rolling, not fixed. Generating five at noon means the next slot opens gradually through the afternoon rather than all at once at a set hour.
Playground explicitly blocks multiple accounts used to circumvent this, and flags shared internet connections as a false positive. Worth knowing if you generate from a campus or office network.
Three credits for the good models
The five-per-window allowance applies to Playground's own model. The premium models, which include most of the names people actually want, are metered by a monthly credit allowance of three.
Three generations a month across Nano Banana, GPT Image 2, GPT Image 2.5 and Seedream is a sample, not an allowance. It is enough to see how each handles one prompt.
Pro raises this to 150 credits monthly, and Nano Banana Pro costs four credits per generation, so the conversion is not one-to-one across the catalogue.
Two downloads a day
This is the limit people discover last. You can generate frequently, but you can only export two images per day on free.
Designs stay in unlimited design files either way, so nothing is lost, but a file you cannot download is not useful outside the browser.
Combined with the daily window, the effective free plan is about two usable images a day, which is a modest output for a generous-sounding generation allowance.
The licence is unusually permissive
Playground grants a worldwide royalty-free commercial licence on every tier including free, and states that you own the images you create.
That is the opposite of Recraft, which retains ownership and publishes everything on free. If commercial rights on a zero budget matter, Playground is the better starting point.
Playground also markets itself as a design tool rather than a raw image generator, with templates, design files and unlimited projects. The free tier includes those, so the editing side is not restricted even when generation is.
When the free plan is enough
Personal projects, social posts and anything needing a couple of images a day where the download cap is not binding.
Testing premium models once each, to decide whether a paid subscription elsewhere is justified. Three credits spread across four models does not cover all of them, so choose which to sample.
Anyone using Playground mainly as a design canvas rather than a generator gets a lot for nothing, because design files and templates are unlimited.
When it stops being enough
The first day you need more than two downloadable images, or the first project that depends on a premium model.
Pro at $12 a month billed annually lifts downloads to unlimited, generations to 75 per three hours and credits to 150, which resolves all three limits at once. Pro Plus at $36 adds unlimited generations and 4K editing.
For pure generation volume without a design canvas, Krea gives 100 units a day with no download cap, which suits a different kind of work.
