Runway Free Is 125 Credits, Once, and That Is It
Not a monthly allowance. A single deposit of 125 credits that never refills, worth roughly ten seconds of current-generation video before the account is done.
Runway free costs $0 and gives a one-time deposit of 125 credits that does not expire and does not renew. At Gen-4.5 rates of 12 credits per second, that is about ten seconds of video for the lifetime of the account. Standard at $12 a month billed annually gives 625 credits monthly.1
Most free tiers reset. This one does not, which changes it from an ongoing allowance into a trial with no end date and no refill.
That is not a complaint. A trial that never expires is a reasonable way to sell a product this expensive to run. It is just important to know before you spend the credits on tests.
What the free plan actually includes
| Free | Standard | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $0 | $15/mo, $12 annual |
| Credits | 125, one time | 625/mo |
| Credit renewal | Never | Monthly, no rollover |
| Gen-4.5 video | About 10 seconds total | 52 seconds/mo |
| Gen-4 Turbo video | About 20 seconds total | 104 seconds/mo |
| Gen-4 images at 1080p | About 15 total | 78/mo |
| Asset storage | 5GB | 20GB |
| Watermark on export | Yes | No |
| 4K upscaling | No | Yes |
Those conversion figures come from Runway's own published equivalents, which quote 625 credits as "52s of Gen-4.5, 104s of Gen-4 Turbo, or 78 Gen-4 Images at 1080p". The free allowance is one fifth of that.
What 125 credits buys
Ten seconds of Gen-4.5. Twenty seconds of Gen-4 Turbo. Fifteen still images at 1080p. Some combination of those, since credits are shared across models.
For scale, a single five-second Gen-4.5 clip costs 60 credits. Two of those exhausts the free plan permanently.
The practical consequence is that free users should decide what they are testing before they generate. Burning the allowance on exploratory prompts to see what the model does leaves nothing for the shot you actually wanted.
Generation speed is the hidden difference
Credits are not the only scarce resource. Paid tiers run parallel generations, five at once on Standard and fifteen on Pro, while free users queue.
For a single clip this does not matter. For iterating on a prompt across ten variants it changes the workflow entirely, because the wait between attempts is what makes creative iteration expensive in time rather than money.
Watermarking is the other visible difference. Free exports carry a Runway mark, and Standard removes it. If the output is going anywhere public, free is unusable regardless of the credit count.
The models you get
Free includes "a selection of generative creative models", which in practice means access to the core video and image generation but not the full catalogue. Standard opens all AI video and image models, plus the agentic creative collaborator and music, voice and sound effects generation.
That last point is worth noting for anyone comparing audio tools: Runway's paid tiers now generate music and speech, which overlaps with dedicated products. If your actual need is a soundtrack rather than footage, a purpose-built tool will be cheaper. Suno and ElevenLabs both have free tiers with different trade-offs.
When the free plan is enough
Honestly: for evaluating whether Runway's output quality justifies the price. It is enough to generate two clips and look at them.
It is also enough for a one-off still image project, since fifteen 1080p generations is a usable amount if you only need one result.
It is not enough for anything ongoing, because nothing renews.
When it stops being enough
After roughly two five-second clips. There is no smaller paid option and no free credit pack.
Standard at $12 a month billed annually is the entry point, and it is a genuine monthly allowance rather than a one-time grant. Annual billing saves $36 a year over monthly.
If the requirement is short-form editing rather than generation, CapCut is free and unlimited for editing and does not charge per second. Generation is where the money goes.
Frequently asked questions
Is Runway free?
Yes, but only as a one-time allowance of 125 credits rather than a renewing plan.
Do Runway free credits expire?
No. They last indefinitely, they simply never refill.
How much video can 125 credits make?
About ten seconds of Gen-4.5, or twenty seconds of Gen-4 Turbo, or fifteen 1080p images, or a mix.
Does Runway Free watermark exports?
Yes. Watermark removal starts at Standard.
How much does Runway Standard cost?
$15 a month, or $12 a month billed annually at $144.
Can I buy more credits on the free plan?
No. Top-ups require a paid plan, with a minimum purchase of 1,000 credits.
