CapCut Free Only Watermarks Pro Assets, Not Everything

The watermark question has a precise answer that most guides get wrong: it depends on the assets you use, not the export resolution or the plan itself.

CapCut's free plan costs $0 with no time limit and includes the full timeline editor, multi-track editing, keyframes, chroma key, filters, transitions, auto captions and export up to 1080p. A watermark appears only when a project contains a Pro-tagged template, effect, sticker or sound. Standard is $9.99 a month, Pro $19.99 a month or $179.99 a year.1

CapCut restructured twice in eighteen months, and most articles describe a version that no longer exists. The old $9.99 Pro was renamed Standard, and a new Pro tier appeared at $19.99 with the price of annual billing more than doubling without a formal announcement.

The free tier survived all of it. What changed is where the paywall sits.

The feature set on free is not a demo. Keyframing, speed curves, masks and chroma key are all present, and a competent editor can produce a finished video without paying.

The watermark rule, precisely

Free exports do not carry a watermark by default. A watermark appears when the project uses an asset tagged Pro: a template, an effect, a transition, a text style, a sticker or a music track.

One such asset is enough to watermark the entire export, regardless of resolution. Remove it and the watermark goes away on the next render.

This is why two guides can contradict each other and both be describing a real experience. One person built a video from free assets and got a clean file. Another dropped in a Pro transition and could not remove the mark at any resolution.

What the 2026 restructure changed

The tier names moved. Pro is now Standard at $9.99, mostly a mobile plan, and the new Pro at $19.99 is the desktop and AI plan.

Annual Pro rose to $179.99, up from roughly $77.99, which is a rise of more than 100 percent. Articles quoting Pro at $7.99 or $9.99 a month are describing the pre-restructure product.

Some 1080p export options that were free also moved behind the paywall in early 2026, which is the change free users actually felt.

AI is where free is thinnest

Auto captions are limited to around ten minutes per video, and AI auto-edits and background removal are capped at roughly five uses a month.

Pro includes around 1,200 to 1,400 AI credits a month, and those credits are consumed fast: an avatar render costs 20 to 40 credits and a text-to-video clip 5 to 15. A heavy AI workflow empties a monthly allowance in a week or two.

If the AI features are why you are considering CapCut, the free plan will not tell you much. It is the manual editor that is genuinely free.

The export ceiling is the honest limit

1080p covers YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and most client work. 4K matters if you are delivering to a broadcaster or finishing a project that will be graded.

For most people the ceiling is not the problem. The problem is discovering halfway through an edit that a favourite template is Pro-tagged.

When the free plan is enough

Social video, short-form edits, captions, and anything where a 1080p file is the deliverable. Building the edit entirely from free assets keeps the export clean.

It is also the best free option for anyone editing on a phone, where the timeline is closer to desktop software than most mobile editors manage.

When it stops being enough

A client delivers notes on a template you cannot use cleanly, or the AI tools are the reason you came. Standard removes the watermark for mobile work; Pro is the one to buy if you need 4K or the AI features.

For pure desktop editing with no watermark, VEED's free plan has a different trade: a watermark on every export, but no dependence on which assets you pick. For generation rather than editing, Kling and invideo both run free tiers with daily or weekly allowances. For turning a long recording into shorts automatically, OpusClip meters the source minutes instead.
