Zoho Desk Free Gives Three Agents Forever, and Little Else
Three seats at zero cost with no expiry is rare in help desks. What sits underneath is a deliberately thin product.
Zoho Desk's free edition includes three user licences, free forever, covering email ticketing, a customer portal, a knowledge base and basic reporting. The 15-day trial of any paid plan is broader but reverts to this edition when it ends. Express starts the paid ladder, followed by Standard and Professional.1
Three permanent seats is the most useful thing about this tier. Most help desks either cap at two agents or expire the free plan entirely.
What it does not give you is an omnichannel inbox, automation, or much in the way of reporting. Free is a ticketing tool, not a support platform.
What you actually get
| Free edition | Express | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $0 forever | Paid tier |
| User licences | 3 | Per user |
| Email ticketing | Yes | Yes |
| Knowledge base | Yes | Yes |
| Customer portal | Yes | Yes |
| Basic reporting | Yes | Yes |
| Automation | No | Yes |
| Multi-channel | No | Higher tiers |
| AI agents | No | Higher tiers |
| Card required | No | Yes |
Paid editions climb from Express through Standard to Professional, with AI agent features and multi-channel support appearing further up the ladder.
Three licences, no expiry
Three agents for nothing, indefinitely, is a legitimate small-business help desk.
Zoho states the free edition explicitly as forever, which distinguishes it from the six-month free programme Freshdesk runs.
The trial and the free tier are separate things. You can try a paid plan for 15 days and revert to free, rather than being pushed onto a bill at the end of it.
That combination is rare enough to be worth stating plainly: a permanent free edition and a trial that returns you to it cleanly, with no card left on file.
What free actually omits
No automation rules, which means every ticket gets routed by hand.
No multi-channel inbox. Email and the portal exist; social and messaging channels sit higher up.
No AI agent. Zoho markets its AI heavily, including free tokens for building agents, but that is a paid-edition feature rather than part of the free tier.
The office suite argument
Zoho Desk's real advantage is that it is one product in a very large suite. If a business already pays for Zoho CRM or Zoho Books, Desk integrates without a second vendor.
That integration is not a technicality. Ticket history appearing beside a customer's invoices and deals is a genuine reason to choose a tool with a thinner feature set.
For anyone outside the Zoho ecosystem, the argument is much weaker and the tiers look ordinary.
It is also worth noting what the free edition is not. It is not a customer support platform with reporting a manager can run a team on. It is a competent ticketing tool that happens to cost nothing, and Zoho is content to let the paid editions carry the rest.
How it compares
Freshdesk allows two agents but only for six months, so it is not a permanent free tier at all.
Chatwoot gives two agents and 500 conversations a month with 30-day retention, plus an open source path.
tawk.to has no agent or conversation limit, in exchange for a much plainer product.
Zoho Desk is the most conventional free tier here: a real product, deliberately restricted, with an exit that is easy to walk through.
When it is enough
A small business of up to three support staff that runs on email and wants a knowledge base and customer portal without paying.
An existing Zoho customer who values the integration more than the feature list.
A business that needs a permanent free option with no expiry date and no card.
When it stops being enough
The fourth agent, which forces a paid edition for everyone rather than just the addition.
The moment automation or a messaging channel is required, both of which are paid features.
When reporting needs to answer questions beyond the basics, since the free edition's analytics are thin.
