Proton VPN Free Has No Data Cap and One Device

Almost every free VPN meters your bandwidth. Proton meters your devices instead, and picks the country for you. That single swap changes who the plan suits.

Proton VPN Free costs $0 with no time limit, no data cap, no card required and no advertising. It allows one device connected at a time, servers in ten countries chosen automatically, and includes WireGuard, a kill switch and the same audited no-logs policy as the paid plans. VPN Plus is $9.99 a month, or $3.49 a month on a two-year term.1

Free VPNs are usually funded by something, and that something is usually you: bandwidth sold on, browsing routed through an affiliate, an app that ships with a data business attached.

Proton's free tier is funded by people who upgrade. The consequence is the opposite of the usual free-plan shape. There is no monthly data ceiling at all, and the restriction is one device.2

The ten free countries are the United States, the Netherlands, Japan, Poland, Romania, Canada, Norway, Mexico, Singapore and Switzerland. Guides quoting five are describing the plan as it was before the list doubled.

Unlimited data, one device

One connection at a time is the whole limit. Not one account per household, not one installation: one device connected, and switching to another means disconnecting the first.

For a single laptop this is complete. For a phone and a laptop it is immediately annoying, and for a household it is unusable without paying.

Compare Mullvad, which allows five devices at EUR 5 a month and has no free tier at all. Proton's trade is the reverse: no cost, one device.

You do not choose the country

The app connects you to whichever free server is fastest for your location, and the change server button moves you to another country at random, with a cooldown between attempts.

This is the limit people underrate. A free VPN that lands you in the Netherlands is fine if you wanted the Netherlands. If you needed the United States for a specific service, you reconnect until the draw goes your way.

Proton is not being coy about the reason. Picking a server is the product; on free the automatic choice keeps capacity predictable.

Medium speed is not a throttle on data

Proton states plainly that it imposes no speed, time or data limits on the free plan. What the plan does is give you less priority and a smaller server pool, which reads as medium speed in practice.

Paid servers run up to 10Gbps and carry the traffic of fewer people. The difference is noticeable on large downloads and mostly invisible on browsing.

What you give up in features

No P2P, so torrenting is out. No streaming-optimised servers, and free IPs are widely blocked by streaming services. No Secure Core, Proton's multi-hop route through privacy-friendly jurisdictions.

No NetShield, which blocks ads, trackers and malware at the DNS level. For a privacy tool, that is the loss people notice day to day.

What remains is the encryption, the kill switch, DNS leak protection and the audited no-logs policy. The security core is not reduced.

When the free plan is enough

One device, ordinary browsing, and a need to keep your address off public Wi-Fi. Unlimited data means you can use it as your default connection rather than a rationed emergency tool.

It is also a fair way to evaluate Proton before paying, since the apps are the same.

When it stops being enough

The second device. Then streaming, torrenting or NetShield. VPN Plus at $3.49 on a two-year term answers all of it, and it also bundles into Proton Unlimited if you already pay for Proton Mail.
