HeyGen Free: Three Videos a Month, One Minute Each

Three videos and sixty seconds each is a demo allocation, not a production allowance. The avatar catalogue is what makes it worth using anyway.

HeyGen free costs $0 and gives three videos a month, each capped at one minute, with access to Avatar IV, more than 500 stock video avatars, one custom video avatar and over 30 languages. Exports carry a watermark. Creator at $29 a month raises the limit to 30 minutes per video, adds 1080p, removes the watermark and adds voice cloning.1

The count is not generous and the duration is not either. What makes the free tier worth understanding is the avatar library, which is the genuinely difficult thing to build and the reason HeyGen sits where it does in this market.

Three one-minute videos a month is enough to make a judgement and not enough to run a channel.

HeyGen's paid tiers are credit-based rather than video-count based, so 600 credits on Creator converts to a variable number of videos depending on length and avatar choice.

One minute is the binding constraint

A script read at normal pace runs about 140 to 150 words a minute. One minute means roughly 140 words per video, which is a social clip, an intro or a single product paragraph.

It rules out tutorials, explainers, training modules and anything with a narrative arc. Those are the use cases HeyGen is actually built for, which is why the free tier reads as an evaluation rather than a plan.

Non-paying users also get standard video processing, so renders queue behind paid accounts. For a one-minute clip this is tolerable. It becomes frustrating when you are re-rendering to fix a single spoken line.

Avatar IV on free

Access to Avatar IV is included, which is HeyGen's current generation avatar system and the main competitive advantage it holds.

One custom video avatar is allowed on free, and that is the feature that makes the tier useful. Recording yourself once and generating unlimited variations of that performance is the workflow the product sells, and free lets you test it end to end.

The catch is that a custom avatar without voice cloning is only half the effect. Voice cloning starts at Creator, so free output either uses a stock voice or the original audio from your recording.

Languages and translation

Over 30 languages on free against 175 on paid tiers. For anyone evaluating translation, the gap is large enough that free tells you about avatar quality but not about the feature you would actually buy.

Video translation is a separate workflow from avatar generation, and the language suite on free is a subset. Testing a single language pair is feasible, testing a global rollout is not.

For audio-only voice work, ElevenLabs covers a similar problem with a different pricing model and a free tier without a minute cap on individual clips.

When the free plan is enough

Deciding whether talking-head avatars are good enough for your use case, which is the only question that matters before paying $29 a month.

It is also workable for a single one-off video a month: a welcome message, a short announcement, or a personalised greeting where three attempts is sufficient.

Anyone producing weekly content will exhaust the allowance on the first week and then wait three weeks.

When it stops being enough

The moment a script runs past 140 words, or the moment an export needs to be watermark-free.

Creator at $29 a month is the fix and it changes most of the important limits at once: 30-minute videos, 1080p, no watermark, voice cloning and 175 languages. That is an unusually complete jump for one tier.

Business at $149 adds 4K, five custom avatars and team features. Solo creators almost never need it. If the actual requirement is a presenter-free explainer rather than a human avatar, Descript handles editing and voice from a transcript and may fit better.
