Google Drive Free Is 15GB, and Gmail Is Already Spending It
The 15GB is not Drive's. It is shared with Gmail and Photos, and email alone can consume most of it without you ever uploading a file.
Google Drive free gives 15GB, shared across Drive, Gmail and Google Photos. That single pool is the most important fact about the plan and the least understood. Paid storage starts at 100GB for $1.99 a month, and 2TB with Google AI Plus is $9.99.1
Most people reading a Drive comparison expect a Drive allowance. What they have instead is one bucket that three products draw from, and two of those products fill it without asking.

Gmail is the silent consumer
Every Gmail account is also a Drive account, and attachments and their copies are charged against the same 15GB. A mailbox with ten years of PDF invoices, slide decks and photos can use several gigabytes without the owner ever opening Drive.
The number that surprises people: a single email with a 20MB attachment, forwarded four times and saved, is not 20MB. Compressed and archived mail carries duplicates. It is common for a long-lived account to find 8 to 12GB already gone before any deliberate storage decision is made.
Google Photos is the other consumer, and it changed. Photos and videos uploaded at original quality now count against the 15GB like anything else. There is no longer a free unlimited tier at reduced quality.
What 15GB holds once Gmail has taken its share
The honest answer depends entirely on how much mail you keep. A work account with heavy attachments might have 4GB left. A personal account with light mail might have 13GB.
| What you are storing | Typical size | Fits in 10GB of remaining space |
|---|---|---|
| Google Doc | 100KB | Effectively unlimited |
| PDF report | 2MB | About 5,000 |
| Phone photo | 4MB | About 2,500 |
| Minute of 1080p video | 130MB | About 75 |
For documents, 15GB is genuinely large. For photos and video, it is small and it fills quietly because the upload happens automatically from a phone.
Drive itself is unusually capable on free
The storage is tight but the product is not. On the free tier you get Docs, Sheets and Slides with real-time collaboration, 15GB of shared space, file versioning, offline access on desktop, and sharing to up to five people per file.
Google Docs files themselves take almost no space. A hundred-page document is a few hundred kilobytes because it is stored as structured text rather than a rendered file. If your work is text, the 15GB ceiling is far away.
When the free plan is enough
Students, writers, anyone whose output is documents and spreadsheets, and anyone who has not turned on photo backup. In those cases 15GB is genuinely years of headroom and there is no reason to pay.
It is also enough as a collaboration layer. Sharing a Doc with five people and editing it live costs nothing and works exactly as it does on a paid plan.
When it stops being enough
When the phone starts backing up automatically, or when a Gmail account has accumulated enough attachments. That is usually the trigger, not Drive itself.
The 100GB tier at $1.99 a month is the cheapest storage upgrade in this entire directory, and it is a 6.6x increase for the price of a coffee. It is hard to argue against, which is exactly how Google designs it.
How it compares
Fifteen gigabytes is a mid-sized free tier. MEGA gives 20GB, pCloud up to 10GB, and Dropbox only 2GB.
What makes Google different is not the size but the bundling. You are not choosing a storage product, you are accepting the storage attached to an email account you already have. That is why so many people fill it without noticing.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Drive free storage really 15GB?
Yes, but it is shared across Drive, Gmail and Google Photos rather than being 15GB for Drive alone.
Why is my Google storage full when Drive looks empty?
Gmail attachments and Google Photos are almost always the cause. Check the storage breakdown in your Google account settings to see the split.
Does Google Photos still have free unlimited storage?
No. That arrangement ended, and photos and videos now count against the same 15GB.
Can I share my storage with family?
Yes on paid plans, with up to five others, but not on the free 15GB tier.
What happens when I hit 15GB?
You cannot upload new files or receive new Gmail, which is the part that catches people. Existing files stay accessible.
