Buffer's Free Plan: Three Channels, Ten Posts Each

Ten posts per channel per queue, refilling as they publish. The limit is not how much you can schedule, it is how far ahead you can look.

Buffer's free plan covers three connected channels, ten scheduled posts per channel, 100 saved ideas, one user and the AI assistant. The ten-post limit is a queue that refills as posts publish, not a monthly allowance. Advanced analytics, the hashtag manager, first-comment scheduling and unlimited queueing start at Essentials, around $5 per channel a month.1

The queue model is worth understanding before dismissing the number. Ten posts is not ten posts a month; it is ten posts in the pipeline at any moment.

For a steady poster this is a real constraint on planning and almost no constraint on output. For a launch week it is a wall.

Team at $10 per channel monthly adds unlimited members and approval workflows, which is the tier a small agency actually needs.

Ten in the queue, not ten a month

Each channel holds ten unpublished posts. As soon as one publishes, a slot frees and another can be scheduled.

A daily poster on a single channel therefore never notices the limit: they are working ten days ahead and the queue drains one a day.

A quarterly planner notices immediately. If you batch a month of content on a Sunday, you can only load ten of the thirty-one posts.

The practical workaround is to keep drafts in a document and feed Buffer as slots open. That is a workflow change, not a blocker.

Three channels is the harder limit

Three connected accounts is genuinely tight for anyone running more than one brand, because Instagram plus Facebook plus LinkedIn consumes the whole allowance.

Buffer counts each destination separately. A Facebook page and its linked Instagram profile are two channels, not one.

For a single brand on three networks, the free plan is exactly right. For two brands, it is half a plan.

What the AI assistant and ideas library do

The AI assistant on free helps rewrite and repurpose text, which is more than most freemium social tools offer at zero cost.

One hundred saved ideas is a genuinely useful holding pen for post concepts, separate from scheduled content.

Neither is a substitute for a content calendar, but both reduce the friction that makes people stop posting.

The analytics you do not get

Free analytics show basic performance per post. What is missing is the comparative view: which format wins, which time slot performs, which network is worth the effort.

That is the analytics that justifies paid social tools, and Buffer sensibly puts it behind Essentials rather than pretending the free tier has it.

How it compares

Metricool allows one brand and 20 scheduled posts a month but excludes LinkedIn and X, which Buffer does not.

Hootsuite has no free plan at all, only a 14-day trial and then $99 per user a month.

Buffer is the more generous of the two usable free social tools, and the only one here that supports three networks without a card.

When it is enough

A solo operator running one brand across three networks, posting daily, who does not need multi-user access.

Anyone who wants to replace manual posting without adopting a full social media management platform.

A new account testing which networks are worth the work, before committing to per-channel pricing.

When it stops being enough

The fourth channel. Every extra network after three is a paid slot.

A launch week with fifteen posts going out in seven days, because the queue cannot hold the batch even though all of them would publish.

Any workflow that needs a second person, since free is strictly one user with no approvals.
