**Zoho Invoice is free forever with no trial period and no card. The published caps are two users, a maximum of three projects and 500 invoices per year, with Powered by Zoho Invoice branding on outgoing mail. It includes invoices, estimates, recurring invoices, expenses, time tracking, a client portal and 24x5 email and voice support.**[1](#sources)

This is not a freemium tier waiting to convert. Zoho Invoice has no paid version at all; the product exists to bring businesses into the wider Zoho suite.

That makes it the most straightforward free invoicing tool in this category, and the caps are the only thing to understand.

## What you actually get

| Annual invoice cap | 500 | 1,000 |
| Projects | 3 | Included |
| Expenses | Yes | Yes, up to 1,000 |
| Recurring invoices | Yes | Yes |
| Client portal | Yes | Yes |
| Full accounting | No | Yes |
| Support | 24x5 email and voice | Email |
| Card required | No | No |

The comparison matters because Zoho sells both products. Invoice is the simple end; Books adds general ledger accounting on top.

## 500 invoices a year is roughly two a working day

For a freelancer or a small studio, 500 invoices annually is generous rather than restrictive.

For a business invoicing every order, it is roughly forty a month and will be reached before the year is out.

The cap resets annually rather than monthly, which means a seasonal business can invoice heavily in one quarter and quietly in the next.

## Two users is the binding limit

Two users covers an owner and a bookkeeper, or a two-person partnership. It does not cover a team.

Three projects is stranger still, and it binds anyone doing client work. A studio running five concurrent clients can track three of them.

Both limits are the kind that appear in an FAQ rather than on the pricing card, which is exactly where people find them a month too late.

## What it does well

Recurring invoices, estimates that convert to invoices, expense capture, time tracking and a branded client portal are all included.

Tax-compliant templates and multi-currency invoicing are part of the free product, which several paid competitors treat as an upgrade.

Support is genuinely included: email and voice, Monday to Friday, on the free plan.

## Inactivity deletes your data

Zoho's data retention policy states that accounts inactive for more than 180 days have their data deleted within the following 20 days, after a warning.

Logging in or taking a backup prevents it. For a seasonal business or a dormant side project, that is a real trap.

No paid competitor in this category deletes a dormant account's books, and it is the sharpest clause in an otherwise generous product.

## How it compares

[Wave](https://efreedirectory.com/wave-free-plan-limits/) is free with unlimited invoices and no user cap, earning from payment processing instead.

[Invoice Ninja](https://efreedirectory.com/invoice-ninja-free-plan-limits/) gives unlimited invoicing but only five clients.

[Zoho Books](https://efreedirectory.com/zoho-books-free-plan-limits/) adds real accounting under a $50K revenue threshold.

[FreshBooks](https://efreedirectory.com/freshbooks-free-plan-limits/) has no free plan at all, only a 30-day trial.

## When it is enough

A freelancer or sole trader who needs professional invoices, estimates and a client portal without paying anything.

A two-person business where one person handles admin and the other handles delivery.

Anyone who wants recurring invoices and time tracking without a subscription, and who invoices fewer than 500 times a year.

## When it stops being enough

The third project, which arrives quickly for any business running client work in parallel.

The 501st invoice in a year, or the third user who needs access.

The moment you need a general ledger, bank reconciliation and a balance sheet, which is Zoho Books rather than Invoice.
