- Description: No free tier, a 14-day trial, and a startup programme that hands out up to two years. The gap between those two facts is the whole story.

**Zendesk does not offer a free plan. Support Team costs $19 per agent per month on annual billing, Suite Team $55, Suite Professional $115, and there is a 14-day trial that includes Suite Professional features. Qualified startups can receive up to two years of Zendesk free through a separate programme.**[1](#sources)

This is the reference product in the category, and its absence of a free tier says more about the market than any feature list.

The startup programme is the one genuine route to zero cost, and it is narrow enough that most businesses cannot use it.

## What you actually get

| | Support Team | Suite Team |
| ----------------------- | ------------------- | ------------------- |
| Price | $19/agent/mo yearly | $55/agent/mo yearly |

| AI agents | No | Yes |
| Knowledge base | No | Yes |
| Messaging and live chat | No | Yes |
| Omnichannel routing | No | Yes |
| Telephony | No | Yes |
| Trial | 14 days | 14 days |

Suite Professional at $115 adds advanced automation and AI-driven reporting. Enterprise and Copilot sit above that, with Copilot as a $50 add-on.

## The trial gives you Professional, not the cheap plan

Fourteen days of the Customer Service Suite Professional tier, with Copilot included by default.

That is a generous evaluation and a misleading one. Most businesses that trial Zendesk will end up on Support Team or Suite Team, neither of which resembles what they tested.

Trial access to AI features is explicitly for evaluation, and the capabilities available may vary. Zendesk says so on the page rather than in a footnote.

## The startup programme is real and narrow

Zendesk advertises up to two years free for qualified startups. It is the only path to a zero-cost Zendesk account.

The qualification criteria are not published on the pricing page, and the programme is clearly aimed at companies likely to convert into long-term customers.

Worth checking if you are genuinely early stage. Not worth planning around if you are an established business.

## Why the free tier disappeared

Zendesk once had a lighter entry point and does not now. The product has moved steadily upmarket, and the pricing reflects that.

The consequence is that the cheap end of the market is served by other tools entirely: tawk.to, Crisp, Chatwoot and Tidio all offer permanent free plans that Zendesk does not.

For a small business, choosing Zendesk is choosing to pay from day fifteen onward.

## How it compares

[Intercom](https://efreedirectory.com/intercom-free-plan-limits/) also has no free plan, starting at $19 per seat plus $0.99 per Fin outcome.

[Freshdesk](https://efreedirectory.com/freshdesk-free-plan-limits/) offers a free programme for six months with two agents, which is not permanent either.

[Chatwoot](https://efreedirectory.com/chatwoot-free-plan-limits/) gives two agents and 500 conversations a month for free, indefinitely.

[Zoho Desk](https://efreedirectory.com/zoho-desk-free-plan-limits/) offers three agents forever, which is the closest thing to a permanent free help desk in the paid-product tier.

## When the trial is worth taking

When you are an established support function choosing a platform for several years and need to evaluate the routing and reporting properly.

When you are a startup that may qualify for the programme and want to test the product before applying.

When you are migrating off a tool that has failed and need two weeks of parallel running.

## When it stops making sense

When the business is three people answering email and the budget is zero. Nothing here fits that description.

When you need ticketing only, because Support Team at $19 buys little more than a shared inbox that free tools provide.

When the trial's Professional feature set is what sold you, and the plan you can afford does not include it.
