- Description: Ten thousand characters sounds like 1,500 words. It is less, because Rytr bills your prompt and the output from the same allowance.

**Rytr's free plan gives 10,000 characters per month, a permanent tier with no card required, full access to the template library and 20 or more tones. Premium is $7.50 a month billed annually for unlimited characters. The catch is that your prompt counts against the allowance alongside the output.**[1](#sources)

That last detail is the one almost no review mentions, and it changes the arithmetic. Ten thousand characters of input plus output works out at roughly 1,800 words of usable output at best, and meaningfully less if you paste research into the input field.

Rytr calls these characters "credits" inside the app and "characters" on the pricing page. One credit is one character. There is no conversion.

## The free plan, measured

| | Free | Unlimited |
| -------------------- | ----------------------- | ---------------------------------- |
| Characters per month | 10,000 | Unlimited |
| Prompt text counted | Yes | Yes, against a doubled input limit |
| Templates | 40 or more, all of them | All, plus custom use cases |
| Tones | 20 or more | Same plus one personalised tone |
| Languages | 1 | 1 |
| Plagiarism checks | None | 50 per month |
| Card required | No | Yes |
| Price | $0 | $7.50/mo annual, $9 monthly |

Nothing is gated behind a paywall except volume, custom tones, languages and plagiarism checking. That is a more honest free tier than most: every template works, rather than the two-entry-point demo that some competitors offer.

## How fast 10,000 characters goes

A test with a 100-character prompt produced 614 characters of output and charged 714 credits. The prompt was input, the output was generation, and both were deducted.

| What you are making | Credits per run | Runs per month |
| ------------------------------------ | --------------- | -------------- |
| Meta description | 200 to 400 | 25 to 50 |
| Product description | 600 to 900 | 11 to 16 |
| Blog section | 700 to 1,000 | 10 to 14 |
| Blog section with research pasted in | 2,500 to 4,000 | 2 to 4 |
| Full 1,500-word article | 8,000 to 9,000 | 1 |

Short-form work is where this tier lives. If you need long paragraphs rewritten rather than generated, [QuillBot](https://efreedirectory.com/quillbot-free-plan-limits/) sets no monthly ceiling at all, and if what you want is correction rather than generation, [Grammarly](https://efreedirectory.com/grammarly-free-plan-limits/) leaves that unmetered. Ten thousand characters is a respectable month of product listings, captions and descriptions. It is one long article, and that article will be the only thing you generate that month.

## Pasting research is expensive

Pasting a source document into the input field to give the tool context spends characters before a single word is generated. A 2,000-character brief costs a fifth of the monthly allowance on its own.

If you work by giving the tool background material, the free plan will not survive a week. Write short prompts, or accept that context is a paid feature here even though it is not sold as one.

## Two smaller things that catch people

The quota resets on the calendar month rather than your signup date. Sign up on the 28th and you have three days of allowance before the reset, so a workspace created late in the month should wait rather than waste the first quota on a test.

Unused characters do not accumulate. Whatever is left at the end of the month is gone.

## When the free plan is enough

Short-form output at low volume. Product descriptions for a small catalogue, social captions, meta descriptions, a handful of emails. The template library is fully available, so you can use every format Rytr offers.

It is also a fair way to trial the tool. Nothing about the output quality is degraded on free, which is not true of every product in this category.

## When it stops being enough

The first time you need a long document, or the first time you paste in research. Both spend characters faster than the month can supply them.

At $7.50 a month on annual billing, Unlimited is the cheapest paid upgrade in this entire category, and it is worth noting that it still limits you to one language. Multilingual work starts at Premium around $24 a month.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does Rytr have a free plan?**
Yes. It is permanent, requires no card and gives 10,000 characters a month.

**Do my prompts count against the limit?**
Yes. Both the text you type and the text Rytr generates are deducted from the same allowance.

**How many words is 10,000 characters?**
Roughly 1,500 to 1,800 words of output, and less once prompt text is included.

**When does the quota reset?**
On the calendar month, not on your signup anniversary. Unused characters do not roll over.

**Does the free plan include plagiarism checks?**
No. They start on Unlimited with 50 checks a month.
