- Description: The 125-word cap is not a stingy limit. It is a structural one, and it decides what kind of writing this tool is for.

**QuillBot Free paraphrases up to 125 words per pass, in two modes out of nine, with a 1,200-word summariser and a capped AI detector. Premium starts at $8.33 a month billed annually and removes the word cap entirely. The cap is per pass rather than per month, which makes it a different kind of limit from Grammarly's.**[1](#sources)

The 125-word figure is quoted in every review of this tool and almost none of them explain what it does to a workflow. A paragraph is 100 to 150 words. The free plan therefore rewrites one paragraph per pass, and a 2,000-word article becomes roughly sixteen separate copy-and-paste operations with no memory carried between them.

That is not a pricing trick. It is the design: QuillBot Free is a paragraph tool, and it is a good one at that size.

## The free plan, measured

| Feature | Free | Premium |
| ------------------ | ------------------------------- | ---------------------- |
| Paraphrase length | 125 words per pass | Unlimited |
| Paraphrasing modes | 2: Standard, Fluency | 9 built-in plus custom |
| Summariser input | 1,200 words | 6,000 words |
| AI detector | 1,200 words per scan, daily cap | Unlimited |
| Plagiarism checker | Not included | 25,000 words per month |
| Document storage | 10 MB | 100 MB |
| Price | $0 | From $8.33/mo annual |

Premium is $99.95 a year on annual billing, $19.95 month to month, and $39.95 a quarter. The annual rate of $8.33 is the one that makes the maths interesting, because it undercuts [Grammarly Pro](https://efreedirectory.com/grammarly-free-plan-limits/) by half.

## The two modes are more limiting than the 125 words

Standard and Fluency are the two modes that change wording without changing register. They are useful for smoothing prose. They are not useful for the things people actually search for a paraphraser to do.

Academic mode, Formal mode and the custom modes are Premium. If your task is turning a casual paragraph into something that reads like a journal abstract, the free plan cannot do it, and the 125-word cap is beside the point.

## What the free plan is genuinely good at

Short rewrites where you want a different phrasing and you intend to choose between options yourself. Two sentences from a report. A product description. A line in an email that reads badly.

It is also the most forgiving free paraphraser on the market for the simple reason that paraphrasing is not metered by total volume. You can run 125 words, paste the result, and run the next 125\. There is no monthly allowance that runs out. The cap is per pass, not per month, and that is a different kind of limit from Grammarly's.

## Where it stops being usable

| Task | Free verdict |
| -------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- |
| Rewording one paragraph | Enough. This is what the plan is for |
| Rewording a 2,000-word article | Possible, but 16 passes with no consistency between them |
| Matching an academic register | Not enough. Those modes are Premium |
| Checking a thesis for plagiarism | Not enough. The checker is not in the free plan at all |
| Summarising a long report | Partial. 1,200 words in, 6,000 on Premium |

## One thing to be careful about

Sources disagree on whether the Humanizer is available on the free plan and how many uses it allows. Some report a 125-word cap with six uses a day, others list it as Premium-only, and QuillBot's own help documentation does not state a single clear figure for the free tier.

Treat any specific Humanizer allowance you read online as unconfirmed, including on this page. The paraphrasing limits above are stated in QuillBot's own help centre and are safe to rely on.

If your problem is generation rather than paraphrasing, the constraint is different: [Copy.ai](https://efreedirectory.com/copy-ai-free-plan-limits/) gives a fixed 2,000 words once, and [Notion AI](https://efreedirectory.com/notion-ai-free-plan-limits/) gives roughly 20 responses for the life of a workspace.

## Is Premium worth $8.33 a month?

Yes, if you paraphrase long documents or need a formal or academic register. The annual price is low enough that it undercuts the effort of stitching sixteen free passes together.

No, if your use is occasional rewording of single paragraphs. The free plan is permanent, needs no card, and does the same job at that size.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does QuillBot Free need a credit card?**
No. The free plan is permanent and does not require payment details.

**How many words can QuillBot paraphrase for free?**
125 words per pass. There is no stated monthly ceiling, so the limit applies to each individual rewrite rather than to total usage.

**How many modes does the free plan have?**
Two, Standard and Fluency. The other seven built-in modes and custom modes require Premium.

**Is the plagiarism checker free?**
No. It is not included in the free plan at all. Premium includes 25,000 words of plagiarism checking a month.

**Can I use QuillBot Free for academic writing?**
The grammar checker and summariser are usable. The Academic mode, which is the feature most students want, is Premium only.

*Free-tier limits verified against QuillBot's help centre and pricing page on 19 October 2026\. The Humanizer allowance is disputed between sources and is marked unconfirmed above.*
