- Description: Ten gigabytes free, and a pricing model where you can buy storage once instead of renting it. The free tier tells you which half of that is the real pitch.

**pCloud gives up to 10GB free, with 30-day file recovery, Swiss hosting and a choice of EU or US data region at signup. Its paid plans are unusual in this market: alongside monthly and annual billing, it sells lifetime storage as a one-time purchase, currently $219 for 500GB, $499 for 2TB and $1,499 for 10TB.**[1](#sources)

Ten gigabytes is a good free tier. The lifetime pricing is the reason to read the rest, because it changes the arithmetic of the whole category.[2](#sources)

## The plans, measured

**Prices measured on 22 October 2026.** Vendor plan terms, allowances and prices change without notice, so treat every figure on this page as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent fact. Where a number here differs from the vendor's own pricing page, the vendor's page is correct and the figure above is simply older than it.

Those lifetime figures are one-time, not monthly. The pricing page opens on the lifetime tab and shows struck list prices next to current ones, which is where most comparisons go wrong. Monthly and annual plans exist and are cheaper to start.

## Why "up to 10GB" is hedged

pCloud's free allowance has been presented in different ways over time, and its own site describes it as up to 10GB rather than a flat 10GB. The base allocation is smaller and the account can be grown through referral and onboarding tasks to reach the headline number.

The honest reading is that you should expect several gigabytes for certain and up to ten with some effort. Do not plan a workflow that depends on the exact figure until you have created the account and can see the number.

## Data region is a real choice, not marketing

At signup pCloud asks you to pick either European Union or United States storage. The choice is permanent for the account, and it determines where the files physically live.

For anyone with a contractual or regulatory reason to keep data in the EU, this is a meaningful option that most consumer storage products do not offer at any price. [MEGA](https://efreedirectory.com/mega-free-plan-limits/) is also European, but does not let you select the region from a free account in the same way.

## Encryption is a paid add-on, and it is not the same as encryption at rest

pCloud encrypts files at rest as standard on all plans. The paid pCloud Encryption add-on is different: it encrypts files client-side with a key only you hold, meaning pCloud cannot read them.

That is the same guarantee [Sync](https://efreedirectory.com/sync-com-free-plan-limits/) gives for free. On pCloud it costs extra, on top of whichever storage tier you buy. If client-side encryption is the requirement, that is the entire comparison.

## What 10GB covers

| What you are storing | Typical size | Fits in 10GB |
| --------------------- | ------------ | ------------ |
| PDF document | 2MB | About 5,000 |
| Phone photo | 4MB | About 2,500 |
| Music track | 8MB | About 1,200 |
| Minute of 1080p video | 130MB | About 75 |
| Large design file | 1GB | About 10 |

Ten gigabytes is enough for a document archive plus a couple of thousand photos. It is not enough for a media library, and pCloud's own free tier does not pretend otherwise.

## When the free plan is enough

Documents, scans, a personal photo collection, and a sync folder between two or three machines. pCloud's desktop client mounts as a virtual drive, which makes it usable for projects without consuming local disk.

It is also the most sensible free tier for anyone considering the lifetime purchase later. Ten gigabytes is enough to test the client, the sync behaviour and the regional hosting before committing to a one-time payment.

## The lifetime model, honestly

A one-time payment for 2TB is genuinely different from a subscription, and it becomes arithmetic rather than loyalty. At $9.99 a month for [Dropbox Plus](https://efreedirectory.com/dropbox-free-plan-limits/), $499 is four years of service. If you expect to still need cloud storage in four years, pCloud's lifetime tier is cheaper.

The risk is the same one that applies to any perpetual licence: it depends on the company remaining solvent and honouring it. That is not a reason to avoid it, but it is a reason not to put your only copy of anything there.

## How it compares

Ten gigabytes beats [Dropbox](https://efreedirectory.com/dropbox-free-plan-limits/), [OneDrive](https://efreedirectory.com/onedrive-free-plan-limits/), [iCloud](https://efreedirectory.com/icloud-plus-free-plan-limits/) and [Sync](https://efreedirectory.com/sync-com-free-plan-limits/). It loses to [Google's 15GB](https://efreedirectory.com/google-drive-free-plan-limits/) and [MEGA's 20GB](https://efreedirectory.com/mega-free-plan-limits/).

Where it is unique is the pricing structure. No other major provider in this directory will sell you storage once and stop charging.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is pCloud free really 10GB?**
The site says up to 10GB. Expect a smaller base allowance that can be increased to the headline figure.

**Are pCloud's prices monthly?**
The pricing page opens on a lifetime tab. $219, $499 and $1,499 are one-time payments, not monthly charges.

**Does pCloud free include encryption?**
Files are encrypted at rest, but client-side encryption with your own key is a paid add-on.

**Can I choose where my data is stored?**
Yes, EU or US, chosen at signup and fixed for the account.

**What happens when pCloud free is full?**
Uploads stop. Existing files remain accessible and recoverable within the 30-day window.
