- Description: Twenty AI responses for the lifetime of the workspace, and one category of AI feature that never touches the counter. That exemption is the whole story.

**Notion gives every Free and Plus workspace a one-time allowance of about 20 complimentary AI responses. It is not monthly and it does not refill. Any AI write, summarise, translate or question counts as one, and clicking Try again counts as another. Full Notion AI requires the Business plan at $20 per member per month billed annually.**[1](#sources)

Twenty is enough to answer a question about how the tool feels. It is not enough to decide whether it fits how you work, which is why the more useful fact is the exemption: **database AI features do not use the allowance.**

Autofill properties, tagging entries and AI-powered database operations keep working after the 20 responses are gone. On a workspace built around databases, that is a working feature rather than a demo.

## What counts and what does not

| Action | Costs a response |
| ----------------------------------------- | ---------------------- |
| Writing or editing text with AI | Yes, one each |
| Summarising a page | Yes, one each |
| Asking a question about the workspace | Yes, one each |
| Translating a passage | Yes, one each |
| Clicking Try again for a different answer | Yes, an additional one |
| Autofill on a database property | No |
| AI database creation and operations | No |
| AI Meeting Notes | Trial only, then paid |

The Try again detail is the one that catches people. Asking for a different version of an answer you did not like spends a second response, so twenty clicks is fewer than twenty useful results.

## The free Notion plan itself, separately

Notion AI is only half the question. The Free plan is permanent and generous for one person, and those limits have nothing to do with AI.

| | Free | Plus $10 | Business $20 |
| ---------------- | --------------------------------- | ------------------------ | ------------ |
| Pages and blocks | Unlimited solo, limited for teams | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| File upload size | 5 MB per file | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Page history | 7 days | 30 days | 90 days |
| Guests | 10 | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Notion AI | About 20 responses, once | About 20 responses, once | Included |

The important line is the last one. Paying for Plus does not buy you Notion AI. Plus is a collaboration and storage upgrade that leaves the AI allowance exactly where it was, which surprises people who upgrade expecting the assistant to switch on.

## The $10 upgrade that does not do what you think

Until May 2025, Notion AI was sold as a $10 per member add-on to any plan. That has been withdrawn for new customers, and existing add-on subscribers were migrated onto Business. New customers now reach full Notion AI only through Business.

So the real cost of "Notion with working AI" is $20 per member per month on annual billing, or $24 monthly. There is no cheaper route, and the $10 tier sits in between as a trap for anyone who assumes it buys the assistant.

## When the 20 responses are enough

When you want to know whether the assistant is good at your material. Twenty attempts spread across summarising, drafting and asking questions about your own pages will tell you that.

It is also enough if the only AI you want is database autofill, because that is exempt and does not consume the allowance at all.

For notes that stay local and survive any vendor going away, [Obsidian](https://efreedirectory.com/obsidian-free-plan-limits/) is free outright with no account.

## When it stops being enough

If what you needed was a writing assistant rather than a workspace, [Grammarly](https://efreedirectory.com/grammarly-free-plan-limits/) and [QuillBot](https://efreedirectory.com/quillbot-free-plan-limits/) both meter by month or by pass rather than by a lifetime allowance, which is a better shape if you write every day.

The first time the allowance runs out mid-task. There is no top-up and no monthly reset, so a workspace that has spent its 20 responses never gets them back. Upgrading is the only path, and it is a per-member cost for every person in the workspace.

## Frequently asked questions

**How many free Notion AI responses do you get?**
About 20 per workspace, allocated once. It is not a monthly quota and it does not refill.

**Does upgrading to Plus give you Notion AI?**
No. Plus keeps the same limited trial. Full access starts at Business, $20 per member per month billed annually.

**Does clicking Try again use another response?**
Yes. Every AI action that returns an answer counts as one, including regenerating a previous answer.

**Do database autofill features use responses?**
No. Database AI operations are exempt and continue working after the allowance is spent.

**Is the Notion Free plan limited to 1,000 blocks?**
Only for workspaces with two or more members. A single-member workspace has unlimited pages and blocks.
