- Description: Fifteen hundred tokens a day sounds like 150 images. Leonardo prices by GPU load, so a real image costs several tokens and the daily allowance is gone in an afternoon.

**Leonardo's free plan gives 150 fast tokens every 24 hours with no card required. Tokens do not accumulate, so anything unused expires at reset. Token cost is set by GPU load rather than a fixed rate, which puts a realistic free allowance at somewhere between 10 and 30 finished images a day depending on model and resolution.**[1](#sources)

The headline number misleads everyone the first time. A token is not an image. Leonardo's own token documentation says cost is based on GPU load, and the Generate button shows an estimate before you run it, which is the only reliable way to know what a generation will spend.

What the free plan is generous with is the reset. There is no monthly pool to exhaust in one evening and then wait a month to refill. Whatever you do, you get a fresh 150 tomorrow.

## The free plan, measured

| | Free | Essential |
| ----------------------- | -------------------------------- | -------------------------- |
| Price | $0 | $12/mo, about $10 annually |
| Token allowance | 150 fast tokens per day | 8,500 per month |
| Rollover | None, unused tokens expire daily | Bank up to 25,500 |
| Concurrent generations | 1 | 2 |
| Queue limit | 5 | 5 |
| Private generations | No, all public | Yes |
| Personal model training | No | 10 per month |
| Collections | Limited | Unlimited |
| Token top-ups | Not available | Available |
| Commercial use | Allowed, with caveats | Allowed |

The row that separates free from paid most sharply is not tokens, it is the rollover bank. A paid user who has a quiet week carries 25,500 tokens forward. A free user who does not log in for a week has 150 tokens, exactly as before. The allowance is a daily window, not a balance, and treating it as a balance is how people end up planning projects that cannot be finished.

## What 150 tokens actually buys

Leonardo does not publish a fixed cost table, because the cost genuinely varies. Its help centre does publish worked examples, and they are the most useful numbers on the site.

| Action | Token cost | Runs from 150 tokens |
| --------------------------- | ----------- | ----------------------- |
| Default image to 768 pixels | 1 per image | Up to 150 single images |
| Prompt Magic V2 | 2 per image | 75 |
| Background removal | 2 | 75 |
| Upscale | 5 | 30 |
| Alchemy modes | 8 to 16 | 9 to 18 |
| 3D texture generation | 30 | 5 |

Read the first row against the last. One default 768 pixel image costs a single token, so in theory the allowance is 150 images. One 3D texture costs thirty, so it is five. The same allowance spans a factor of thirty depending on what you ask for, and nobody hits the theoretical maximum because nobody generates at minimum settings all day.

Third-party reviews that put free usage at 10 to 30 images a day are working from real settings rather than the minimum, and that is the honest range. At high resolutions on premium models, 150 tokens is closer to ten images. On Leonardo's own models at default settings it is considerably more.

## One generation at a time is the other ceiling

Free accounts run a single generation, with a queue of five, and Blueprints get the same treatment. Essential raises concurrency to two and Premium to three.

On a platform built for iterating through variations, one-at-a-time is a meaningful limit even though it costs no tokens. Four variations of a prompt take four sequential waits. The token budget and the concurrency limit fail at different times, and the concurrency limit usually gets there first.

## Public by default, and the licence is not the problem

Free-tier creations are public. Other Leonardo users can see them, and Leonardo's terms allow others to remix public assets. Private generation begins at Essential.

Commercial use is permitted on the free plan, which many older reviews get wrong. The constraint is not whether you may sell an image, it is who else may use it and whether the client is comfortable with the work sitting in a public feed. For most client work those are the same objection.

## Why the daily reset is better than a monthly pool

Most free tiers here meter monthly. [Canva gives 20 AI uses a month](https://efreedirectory.com/canva-free-plan-limits/), [Adobe Express publishes no count at all](https://efreedirectory.com/adobe-express-free-plan-limits/), and Ideogram's free allowance is weekly. Leonardo is unusual in resetting every 24 hours.

That shape suits experimentation badly and suits steady use well. You cannot batch a month of work into one session, which is the point. But you also cannot lose a month by testing something ambitious on the first day. A daily reset rewards people who show up regularly, which is a fairer design than a pool that punishes one bad afternoon.

## When the free plan is enough

Learning what the models do, comparing Leonardo against Midjourney or Ideogram on the same prompt, producing a handful of concept images for something you are making for yourself. A dozen images a day is genuinely a lot of exploring.

It is also enough for a small personal project spread over weeks. The reset means a slow burn costs nothing extra, and 150 tokens a day for a month is around 4,500 tokens in total, which is more than half of what Essential gives you in a month.

## When it stops being enough

The first client brief. Privacy is the trigger, not volume, and it arrives before the token count ever becomes the problem.

The second is consistency. Training a personal model is a paid feature, so anything that needs the same character or the same product across many images is out of reach on the free tier. That is a capability gap rather than a budget one, and no amount of careful token management closes it.

Essential at $12 a month, or about $10 annually, buys privacy, rollover, a second concurrent generation and ten model trainings a month. Compared with [Ideogram's Plus at $20](https://efreedirectory.com/ideogram-free-plan-limits/) or Canva Pro at $144 a year, it is the cheapest paid entry in this category.

## Frequently asked questions

**How many free tokens does Leonardo give?**
150 fast tokens per day, resetting every 24 hours. They do not roll over, so anything unused expires.

**How many images is 150 tokens?**
There is no fixed rate. Leonardo prices by GPU load, from 1 token for a default 768 pixel image to 30 for a 3D texture. A realistic day is 10 to 30 images.

**Can I save up free tokens for a bigger project?**
No. The free allowance resets daily and never accumulates. Rollover banks are a paid feature, holding up to 25,500 tokens on Essential.

**Can I sell images made on Leonardo's free plan?**
Commercial use is permitted, but free-tier creations are public and other users may remix them. Private generation requires a paid plan.

**Can I remove backgrounds or upscale on the free plan?**
Yes, and both spend tokens from the same daily 150\. Background removal costs 2, upscaling costs 5.

**Is there an API on the free plan?**
No. API access is a paid feature and is billed separately from the web plan's token allowance.
