# Invoice Ninja Is Free Forever, But Only for Five Clients

- Description: An unusual shape: the invoicing is unlimited, the client list is not. Five clients is a freelancer's starting month, not a business.

**Invoice Ninja's free plan is unlimited invoicing capped at five clients. It includes eleven professional templates, your logo on invoices, online payment acceptance, auto-billing and recurring invoices, projects with billable time, expenses and a client-side payment portal. Ninja Pro at $14 a month removes the client cap and the Created by Invoice Ninja branding.**[1](#sources)

This is one of the more interesting free tiers in the category because of where the limit sits.

Invoices are unlimited. Clients are five. A business that bills one client weekly is fine; a business with six customers is not.

Pro adds branded URLs, custom invoice designs, API access, late-payment reminders and profit and loss reporting. Enterprise sits above it.

## The client cap is the whole business model

Five clients is a number a freelancer passes quickly. Two or three regulars plus a handful of one-offs and the allowance is spent.

Because invoices are unlimited, the cap does not limit how much you bill, only how many relationships you can hold at once.

That is a clever line to draw. It is also why the free plan suits a specific shape of business: a few long-running clients billed repeatedly.

## What free includes that rivals charge for

Recurring invoices, auto-billing, projects with billable time, kanban boards and expense tracking are all in the free plan.

A client-side portal where customers can view invoices and pay is included too, which several competitors reserve for paid tiers.

Eleven templates and your own logo mean invoices look professional without an upgrade, despite the small footer credit. For a freelancer sending a first invoice to a new client, that presentation matters more than most feature comparisons admit.

## Self-hosting is the other route

Invoice Ninja is open source and can be self-hosted, which removes the client cap entirely.

That is the same arrangement Chatwoot and n8n use elsewhere in this directory: give the software away, charge for the hosted version. The trade is identical too, in that you take on upgrades, backups and a database you now own.

For anyone who has run a web application before, the self-hosted edition is the genuinely unlimited free tier.

## Where the free tier is thin

No custom invoice designers beyond the eleven templates, and no branded URL for the client portal.

No automated late-payment reminders, which is the single most useful feature for getting paid on time.

No profit and loss reporting, so the accounting view is limited to invoices and expenses rather than a full picture.

## How it compares

[Zoho Invoice](https://efreedirectory.com/zoho-invoice-free-plan-limits/) offers far more headroom on clients but caps invoices at 500 a year and users at two.

[Wave](https://efreedirectory.com/wave-free-plan-limits/) has no client or invoice cap and full bookkeeping, funded by payment processing.

[ZipBooks](https://efreedirectory.com/zipbooks-free-plan-limits/) allows unlimited invoices, vendors and customers with one bank connection.

Invoice Ninja wins on per-invoice features and loses on client headroom.

## When it is enough

A freelancer with up to five active clients who bills repeatedly and wants recurring invoices without paying.

A consultant who values the client portal and deposits, both of which are included free.

Anyone willing to self-host and therefore remove the cap entirely.

## When it stops being enough

The sixth client. There is no workaround short of upgrading or self-hosting.

When you want the Created by Invoice Ninja line gone, or your own domain on the portal.

When late-payment reminders would save more time than $14 a month costs.
