- Description: Ideogram's documentation says 30 credits a week. Its pricing page says 10. Both are live. The free plan also requires a Google, Apple or Microsoft sign-in to get any credits at all.

**Ideogram's free plan gives weekly credits rather than daily ones, capped at one generation at a time, with every image published publicly. Ideogram's documentation states 30 credits a week and its pricing page states 10, both live on 20 October 2026\. Credits are granted only to accounts created with Google, Apple or Microsoft sign-in.**[1](#sources)

The two figures are not a rounding error. Thirty credits a week is roughly 120 credits a month, which is more than Canva's entire free AI allowance. Ten is a third of that. Which number you get appears to depend on which page you read before signing up.

The third detail matters more than either number, and it is the one almost no review mentions: an account made with an email address and password receives no free credits at all. Not fewer. None. Ideogram's documentation says those accounts "can buy credits or subscribe."

## What the free plan actually includes

| | Free | Plus |
| ---------------------- | -------------------------------------- | --------------------------- |
| Price | $0 | $20/mo, $15 billed annually |
| Credits | Weekly, 10 or 30 depending on the page | 2,400 priority credits/mo |
| Sign-in required | Google, Apple or Microsoft only | Any method |
| Private generation | No, everything is public | Yes |
| Concurrent generations | 1 running or queued | 8 |
| When credits run out | Wait for next week | Unlimited slow queue |
| Quality export | No | Yes |
| After credits run out | Hard stop | Keeps generating, slower |
| Batch generation | No | Pro only |

That last pair of rows is the real division. On Plus, Pro and Team, running out of credits does not stop you generating. Ideogram drops you into an unlimited slow queue and the work continues. Free and pay-as-you-go accounts have no such floor, so on the free plan the allowance is a hard stop rather than a speed limit.

## The credit maths depends on which model you pick

Ideogram halved its 4.0 pricing in September 2026, and the current rates are worth knowing before you spend a week's allowance on one image.

| Setting | Credits per image, model 4.0 | Images from 30 weekly credits | Images from 10 weekly credits |
| -------- | ---------------------------- | ----------------------------- | ----------------------------- |
| Turbo | 1 | 30 | 10 |
| Balanced | 2 | 15 | 5 |
| Quality | 3 | 10 | 3 |

The default is balanced for most models, so a free account is realistically looking at five images a week if the pricing page is right, or fifteen if the documentation is. Either way it is a trial allowance, not a working one, and the number you plan around can be wrong by a factor of three.

Older models still bill at higher rates. Ideogram 3.0 charges 2, 4 and 6 credits for a batch of four at Turbo, Balanced and Quality, so reaching for a previous model to save credits does the opposite.

## Everything you make is public

Free-tier generation is published to Ideogram's community gallery, and private generation starts at Plus. Ideogram's documentation states it plainly: on the free plan, everything you generate is public.

For logo experiments and typography tests that is harmless. For anything under an NDA, an unreleased product or a client's brand, it is disqualifying, and it is the limit that costs money to remove rather than the credit count. Every other tool in this category lets you keep a free generation to yourself.

## One generation at a time is the ceiling nobody counts

Free accounts run a single generation, running or queued. Plus allows eight concurrent and Pro allows more.

On a service where each generation takes tens of seconds, that is the difference between iterating on a prompt and watching a progress bar. Testing four variations of a text prompt means four sequential waits, not one batch. The credit allowance runs out long before the patience does.

## Why the free tier keeps shrinking

Ideogram's free allowance has been cut repeatedly since 2024: from a daily grant, to a smaller daily grant, to a weekly one in January 2025\. The current documentation setting 30 a week is more generous than the pricing page's 10, which suggests the two pages are maintained by different people and neither has been reconciled.

That history is the useful signal. Whatever the number is today, the direction of travel has been one way for two years, so a workflow that depends on the free allowance is a workflow that will move under you. [Canva publishes its 20-use limit and holds it](https://efreedirectory.com/canva-free-plan-limits/). Ideogram publishes two different numbers at once.

## When the free plan is enough

Testing whether Ideogram renders text the way you need, which is the thing it does better than most generators. A handful of poster or wordmark experiments a month, on images you do not mind publishing.

It is also fine as a second opinion. If [Canva's 20 pooled uses](https://efreedirectory.com/canva-free-plan-limits/) or [Adobe Express's unpublished daily allowance](https://efreedirectory.com/adobe-express-free-plan-limits/) is producing weak typography, a few Ideogram generations a week are a cheap way to compare.

## When it stops being enough

The first client image. Privacy is a Plus feature, which means the moment the work has a client attached, the free plan is out of the question regardless of credits.

The second reason is text volume. Ideogram's strength is lettering, and lettering is iterative, which is exactly what one-concurrent-generation and a weekly cap are worst at. A logo lockup that needs twenty variations cannot be made on five images a week.

Plus is $20 a month, or $15 with annual billing at $180 a year, and it buys 2,400 credits, privacy and eight concurrent runs. That is a real jump in both directions, and it is worth comparing against [Penpot](https://efreedirectory.com/penpot-free-plan-limits/) if what you actually need is a design tool rather than a generator.

## Frequently asked questions

**How many free credits does Ideogram give?**
The two vendor pages disagree. Ideogram's documentation says 30 credits a week and its pricing page says 10 a week, both live on 20 October 2026\. Treat the number as unstable.

**Why did I get no free credits?**
Free credits are granted to accounts created with Google, Apple or Microsoft sign-in. Accounts made with an email and password get none, and can only buy credits or subscribe.

**Do Ideogram credits reset daily?**
No. The free allowance is weekly and does not accumulate. Paid plans get monthly credits that reset on the renewal date without rollover.

**Can I use Ideogram free for commercial work?**
The licence permits commercial use, but free-tier images are public and cannot be made private without Plus. Public visibility is the practical blocker for client work, not the licence.

**What happens when free credits run out?**
Generation stops until the weekly reset. Paid plans fall back to an unlimited slow queue instead, so only free and pay-as-you-go accounts hit a hard stop.

**Does the free plan include the newest models?**
Yes. The model is not gated, only the credit allowance and the features around it. What you lose on the free tier is privacy, concurrency and speed.

*Free-plan credits, credit rates, feature gates and pricing verified against Ideogram's documentation and its pricing page on 20 October 2026\. The two vendor pages state different weekly credit allowances, and that discrepancy is reported rather than resolved.*
