**Grok has a permanent free tier at $0 covering chat, web and X search, voice mode and limited image generation, with limits xAI never quantifies. Its pricing page calls the allowance generous and prints no count. Paid access moved to The X Subscription on 12 October 2026.**[1](#sources)

Almost every guide answers the limit question with ten messages every two hours. That number appears on no xAI page. It has been repeated for long enough that it functions as folklore, and the honest answer is that the vendor will not say.

What xAI does say is the shape. Since June 2026, paid plans share one weekly usage pool across chat, images, voice and coding, shown as a percentage in Settings. The free tier sits outside that pool with its own separate allowances.

## What the free plan actually includes

| | Free | Plus |
| ------------------- | --------------------------- | ------------------------- |
| Price | $0 | $8/mo |
| Chat | Limited, no published count | Weekly pool |
| Web and X search | Limited | Included |
| Image generation | Limited | Included |
| Video generation | No | Tier dependent |
| Voice mode | Included | Included |
| Cursor coding agent | Limited | Included |
| API access | No | Billed separately |
| Usage view | None | Percentage of weekly pool |

The bundling is the unusual part. The X Subscription now includes Grok, the Cursor editor and X Premium perks in one purchase, so the cheapest paid tier at $8 is not really an AI subscription, it is a social media subscription with an AI attached.

## The weekly pool replaced per-product limits

Before June 2026, paid Grok plans had separate daily limits for chat, images, voice and the coding agent. That changed to a single weekly pool, and the tiers are now expressed as multiples of Plus: Premium at four times, Super at fifteen and Ultra at fifty.

That is a fairer design than most, because it lets a heavy image day borrow from a light chat week. It also means a paid user cannot say how many messages they have. They get a percentage in Settings instead, which is a real improvement over [Claude's opaque five-hour window](https://efreedirectory.com/claude-free-plan-limits/) but still not a number.

## What the free tier actually costs you

Not money, and not a disclosed count either. The practical limits are things you discover by trying.

Free users do not get DeepSearch, video generation, or API access. Image generation is capped in a way xAI does not state. During peak demand, free requests sit behind paid ones, which is the same priority trade [Microsoft makes with Copilot](https://efreedirectory.com/microsoft-copilot-free-plan-limits/).

The bigger practical constraint is the reset schedule. Because xAI does not publish when free allowances refresh, you cannot plan a working session around them. You find out by hitting the wall.

## Why the number stays hidden

A published limit is a commitment. xAI has changed Grok's model line-up repeatedly, retiring Grok 4 ten months after launch and redirecting requests to Grok 4.3, and every model swap changes what a message costs to serve.

Leaving the number unpublished lets the allowance move with capacity without an announcement. [Ideogram does the same thing](https://efreedirectory.com/ideogram-free-plan-limits/), though less successfully, since two of its own pages currently disagree by a factor of three.

## When the free plan is enough

Curiosity, and real-time questions where the X corpus matters. Grok's access to posts is genuinely different from what other assistants can reach, and for tracking an unfolding event that is worth something.

It is also enough as a second opinion. If you already pay for [ChatGPT](https://efreedirectory.com/chatgpt-free-plan-limits/) or [Gemini](https://efreedirectory.com/gemini-free-plan-limits/), a free Grok account costs nothing and occasionally answers differently.

## When it stops being enough

The first time you need video, DeepSearch or the API, all of which are unavailable on free at any usage level.

The second is volume, and this is where the missing number hurts. If you cannot tell whether the free tier gives you twenty messages a day or five, you cannot decide whether $8 removes your problem. The cheapest way to test it is to use the free tier for a week and count what you actually hit.

At $8 for Plus, the decision is small enough that most people will just pay rather than investigate, which is presumably the point of not printing the number.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is Grok free?**
Yes. There is a permanent free tier at $0 with no card required, covering chat, search, voice and limited image generation.

**How many free messages does Grok give?**
xAI does not publish a figure. Its pricing page describes the allowance as generous and states no count, window or reset schedule.

**Is the 10 messages per two hours figure real?**
It is widely repeated and appears on no xAI page. Treat it as an observation from users rather than a published policy.

**What is The X Subscription?**
The plan structure that replaced SuperGrok for new customers on 12 October 2026, bundling Grok, Cursor and X Premium across tiers at $8, $30, $100 and $200 a month.

**Do paid Grok plans have daily limits?**
No. Since June 2026 there is one weekly usage pool shared across chat, images, voice and coding, with tiers expressed as multiples of Plus.

*Free-tier features, pool structure and pricing verified against xAI's pricing page and help documentation on 20 October 2026\. xAI publishes no numeric allowance for the free tier, so any specific per-day figure in circulation is unofficial.*
