**ChatGPT Go's free year in India begins expiring from 4 November 2026, and the plan renews at Rs 399 a month unless cancelled first. OpenAI opened the promotion on 4 November 2025, gave each account twelve months from its own redemption date, and closed new claims on 21 January 2026\. Anyone who redeemed on the opening day is therefore at the end of the free period tomorrow, with later claimants following through to January 2027.**[1](#sources)

The date that matters is not on any announcement page. It is on your own billing screen, because the twelve months run from when you claimed rather than from a single cut-off. Still, 4 November is the first cohort, and it is the one worth checking today.

## What ChatGPT Go actually includes

Go was built for India and launched at Rs 399 a month in August 2025, with UPI payments and rupee billing. The free year that followed is the reason it matters now.[2](#sources)

**Prices measured on 27 October 2026.** Vendor plan terms, allowances and prices change without notice, so treat every figure on this page as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent fact. Where a number here differs from the vendor's own pricing page, the vendor's page is correct and the figure above is simply older than it.

Two rows in that table decide the question for most people, and neither is the obvious one.

The first is the model. OpenAI's own documentation is explicit that Free and Go both run GPT-5.6 Luna, and that "Free and Go users do not have access to GPT-5.6 Sol". Paying Rs 399 does not buy a better model. It buys more of the same one.

The second is advertising. Go shows ads in India, as does Free, so the subscription does not remove advertising from the experience.

## What you are actually paying for

Volume. Go is a capacity upgrade, not a capability upgrade, and the gap is real for anyone who hits free limits regularly.

Free ChatGPT allows three file uploads a day. Go multiplies that and the message and image allowances by ten, doubles memory, and unlocks projects, tasks and custom GPTs, which is where the useful work actually happens once you are past casual use.

For a student revising from uploaded notes, or a freelancer drafting proposals against a house style stored in a project, that is the difference between a working tool and an exhausting one. For someone asking the occasional question, it is Rs 4,788 a year for headroom they will never use.

The honest test is a single week. Count how often you hit a limit. If the answer is never, the free plan is not costing you anything, and the free year simply masked that.

## The renewal, and the cheapest way to get it wrong

Nothing cancels automatically. When the twelve months end the saved card or UPI mandate is charged Rs 399, and that price includes GST.

Cancel in the wrong place and it does not stick. Go purchased on the web is cancelled in ChatGPT's settings under billing. Purchased through Google Play, it is cancelled in the Play Store subscriptions screen. Purchased on an iPhone, it is cancelled in iOS settings under subscriptions, not in the ChatGPT app.

UPI users should also revoke the mandate in their UPI app. Cancelling the subscription and leaving an active autopay mandate is the specific failure that produces a charge people believe they prevented.

Timing matters too. Cancelling ends access at the end of the paid period, so cancelling a fortnight early does not forfeit free days; it simply guarantees no charge. But uninstalling the app does nothing at all, which remains the most common misunderstanding about app-store subscriptions.

## If you cancel, what you fall back to

Your chats stay. Your account moves to the free plan, and the free plan in India now shows ads and runs on the same GPT-5.6 Luna model Go uses.

What you lose is the volume: the tenfold message and upload allowances, the longer memory, and projects and custom GPTs.

The model, oddly, is the one thing you keep. That is unusual. Most downgrades take the capable model away first, as [Google did with Gemini in October](https://efreedirectory.com/gemini-free-plan-limits/), when free accounts were cut to Flash-Lite and AI Plus lost Pro entirely. OpenAI has gone the other way with Go: the intelligence is flat across the paid and free tiers, and the meter is the product.

Whether that makes Go worth Rs 399 depends on what breaks first. If you never hit a cap, cancel and keep the model. If you are hitting caps weekly, you are the customer the plan was built for, and Rs 399 is cheaper than the workaround.

## The wider pattern for Indian users

Three things land on Indian subscribers in the same week. The Go free year expires from tomorrow. [OpenAI cancelled a Pro allowance cut on 29 October](https://efreedirectory.com/chatgpt-pro-200-reduction-cancelled/), which is good news for anyone on the $200 tier and irrelevant to everyone here. And [DeepSeek begins charging for search and fetch from 1 November](https://efreedirectory.com/deepseek-search-fetch-billing/).

The pattern is consistent: introductory pricing expires on schedule, and the free tier that survives is the one with the model already in it. Anyone who built a workflow on a twelve-month promotion is finding out this week what the steady state costs.

## Frequently asked questions

**When does the free ChatGPT Go year end?**
Twelve months after the date you redeemed it. The first cohort, who claimed on 4 November 2025, reach the end from 4 November 2026\. Claims closed on 21 January 2026, so the last free years end in January 2027.

**How much is ChatGPT Go in India?**
Rs 399 a month, GST included, payable by card or UPI on the web.

**Will I be charged automatically?**
Yes. The saved payment method is charged at the end of the free period unless you cancel first.

**Does Go give me a better model than Free?**
No. Both run GPT-5.6 Luna. Go raises the limits; it does not unlock GPT-5.6 Sol or the higher thinking levels.

**Do I keep my chats if I cancel?**
Yes. You move to the free plan and keep your conversation history.

**How do I cancel?**
Where you subscribed: ChatGPT settings for web purchases, Google Play for Android, iOS settings for App Store purchases. UPI users should also revoke the autopay mandate.

*Renewal timing, the 4 November 2025 start and 21 January 2026 claim cut-off, and the Rs 399 renewal price verified against OpenAI's promotion record and release notes on 2 November 2026\. The Free and Go model parity and the three-upload free limit verified in OpenAI's own model-availability documentation the same day. Ads on Free and Go in India are as reported for Indian accounts.*
