- Description: A subscription benefit that mirrors the tier price, expires monthly, and cannot cover the one product most subscribers would want it for.

**Eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers can now claim monthly API credits equal to their plan price: $100 for Pro 100, $200 for Pro 200 and $500 for Pro 500, granted after the subscription has been active for seven days. The credits fund one linked API organization, are used before any purchased credits, expire at the end of each billing cycle, and do not cover Codex usage through API keys. Plus, Go and Free are not eligible.**[1](#sources)

Anthropic has been doing the same thing since 7 October, at the same amounts. Two competitors arriving at an identical benefit within a month is worth reading properly, because it tells you what the $100 to $200 tier is for now.[2](#sources)

**Prices measured on 27 October 2026.** Vendor plan terms, allowances and prices change without notice, so treat every figure on this page as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent fact. Where a number here differs from the vendor's own pricing page, the vendor's page is correct and the figure above is simply older than it.

Claude's [Max and Ultra plans carry the same $100 and $200 amounts](https://efreedirectory.com/claude-ultra-plan-rename/), with the same seven-day waiting period and the same exclusion for Free, Pro and Enterprise subscriptions. The business arithmetic is nearly identical too, right down to the pooled cap.

The notable gap is the entry tier. ChatGPT Plus at $20 gets nothing, and so does Claude Pro at $20\. The credits start at $100 a month on both platforms. Anyone building an app on the API has no reason to subscribe to Plus at all, because the money is better spent directly on the API where it buys tokens without a seven-day wait or a monthly expiry.

## Seven days, and why the claim fails

Three things have to be true before the benefit appears, and each of them produces the same silent absence rather than an error message.

**The subscription must be seven days old.** An eligible plan that was activated yesterday does not qualify, and the offer simply is not shown.

**You must act as both owners.** For Pro, you have to be the subscription owner and an owner of the receiving API organization. For Business, you have to own both the workspace and the API organization. An admin role or workspace membership is not enough, and a custom billing role in the API organization does not replace ownership.

**The emails should match.** OpenAI recommends the same address for the ChatGPT account and the API account.

One ChatGPT subscription links to one API organization, and an API organization can hold only one such link. Anyone who has more than one organization has a decision to make at the moment of claiming that is awkward to reverse later.

## What the credits do not buy

This is the paragraph that matters most, and it is easy to skim past.

The credits cover paid API Platform usage billed to the linked organization: the Responses and Chat Completions APIs, Agents, Decisions, GPT-Live and Realtime, Images, and built-in tools including their storage charges.

They explicitly do not cover Codex usage through API keys, and they do not increase your ChatGPT or signed-in Codex usage limits. The grant and your subscription allowance are separate pools that do not lend to each other.

The credits are used before purchased API credits, which means the free balance burns first and the paid one survives longer than you might expect. Then the metering is harder to see: once the grant is exhausted and nothing else is loaded, requests fail with HTTP 429 and the error code credit\_balance\_exhausted, which reads like a rate limit and is not one.

## Should you claim the credits at all?

**Are you on Plus?** Then none of this applies, and the more useful move is to spend the $20 on API credit directly. The verdict is blunt: if your reason for upgrading is API access, skip the subscription and buy the API. The credits are a retention device for people already paying $100 or more.

**Do you use Codex through an API key?** Then the grant does not touch that bill, and the plan you are thinking of upgrading for this reason will not do what you expect.

**Have you been subscribed for a week?** If not, wait. The offer is cohort- and country-dependent as well, so a missing benefit on day eight is a support question rather than a bug on your side.

**Which organization?** Pick the one you actually build in before you claim. Changing it later requires support, and support does not guarantee a credit transfer.

## Why both vendors did this at once

Anthropic put credits into Max on 7 October. OpenAI announced the equivalent on 28 October and doubled Pro allowances on 29 October. Neither is a discount; both are retention.

A $200 subscriber who has linked an API organization and is shipping against that grant is not comparing plans next month. The credits turn a subscription into a development budget, and a development budget is much harder to cancel than a chat subscription. The seven-day waiting period is doing quiet work in the same direction: it is long enough that the plan becomes routine before the benefit arrives.

For anyone reading this as a free-tier question, the answer is the same at both vendors. Nothing has changed below $100\. The free tiers did not improve, [the cheap annual plans are winding down](https://efreedirectory.com/chatgpt-go-free-year-ending/), and the bundling is happening entirely at the top of the range.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does ChatGPT Plus get API credits?**
No. Plus, Go and Free are explicitly not eligible.

**How much do Pro plans get?**
The same as the plan price: $100 for Pro 100, $200 for Pro 200, $500 for Pro 500, per monthly billing cycle.

**Why can't I see the benefit?**
The usual causes are a subscription under seven days old, not owning both the subscription and the API organization, differing email addresses, or an offer cohort that does not include your country.

**Do the credits roll over?**
No. Unused credits expire at the end of each subscription billing cycle.

**Can I spend them on Codex?**
Not through API keys. Codex usage via API keys is excluded, and the grant does not raise your ChatGPT or signed-in Codex limits.

**What happens when they run out?**
Requests fail with HTTP 429 and the code credit\_balance\_exhausted. That is a balance error, not a rate limit; add credits or set up Auto Recharge.
