- Description: Ten gigabytes sounds generous until you meet the 250MB per-file ceiling. Box's free tier is built for documents, and it enforces that.

**Box's free individual plan gives 10GB of storage, but caps every upload at 250MB per file. Personal Pro is $10 a month billed annually, or $14 month to month, and raises storage to 100GB with a 5GB per-file limit. Business plans start at $5 per user per month for three users minimum.**[1](#sources)

The 10GB headline is competitive. The 250MB ceiling is what actually defines the plan, because it is the limit people hit first and the one that is hardest to work around.

## The plans, measured

**Prices measured on 22 October 2026.** Vendor plan terms, allowances and prices change without notice, so treat every figure on this page as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent fact. Where a number here differs from the vendor's own pricing page, the vendor's page is correct and the figure above is simply older than it.

## What 250MB per file excludes

A 250MB ceiling sounds like it would never matter, until you check what normal files weigh. It is comfortable for documents, spreadsheets and slide decks. It fails on almost everything else.

| File type | Typical size | Under 250MB |
| ------------------------------ | ------------ | ----------- |
| PDF contract | 3MB | Yes |
| PowerPoint deck with images | 40MB | Yes |
| Raw photo | 25MB | Yes |
| Minute of 4K video | 350MB | No |
| Ten-minute recorded call | 500MB | No |
| Design file with linked assets | 1.2GB | No |

So the free plan is a document repository. That is what Box was built for, and the limit is not an accident. Box's customers are enterprises storing contracts, not consumers storing footage.

## The free tier's unusual feature set

What distinguishes Box free from consumer storage is that it is genuinely built for sharing with reviewers. Free accounts get 5 e-signature requests per month, shared links with password protection and expiry dates, and file previews that render Office documents without downloading them.

Five signature requests a month on a free plan is not a demo. Plenty of small operations send fewer than five documents for signature in a month, and the alternatives charge for that.

Version history on free is limited, though Box does not publish an exact retention window for the individual tier in the same way it does for business plans. Treat it as short and do not rely on it for recovery.

## When the free plan is enough

Contract and document workflows. Freelancers sending proposals, small businesses collecting signatures, anyone whose file traffic is text-based and who needs a permanent shareable link with a password on it.

It is also a good fit for a shared reference folder. Ten gigabytes of PDFs, policies and specs is a lot of documents, and the 250MB cap never comes into play.

## When it stops being enough

Any video, any design file, any archive. A single 4K clip is over the limit, so it cannot be uploaded at all, regardless of the 10GB you have free.

The workaround is to split the file, and it is worth knowing before you discover it in a failed upload. An archive split into parts of under 250MB can be uploaded and reassembled by the recipient, which makes the ceiling survivable for backups and large document bundles. It does not make it survivable for video, because a video file split into parts is not a video file until it is whole again.

Personal Pro at $10 a month solves both problems at once: 100GB and a 5GB per-file ceiling. The jump from $0 to $10 is significant compared with [Google's $1.99 for 100GB](https://efreedirectory.com/google-drive-free-plan-limits/), but you are buying a document platform rather than raw storage.

## How it compares

Ten gigabytes is a solid free tier, second only to [MEGA's 20GB](https://efreedirectory.com/mega-free-plan-limits/) in this category. [pCloud offers the same 10GB](https://efreedirectory.com/pcloud-free-plan-limits/) with no per-file ceiling, which is a real difference for anyone storing video.

The real comparison is workflow. If your files are contracts and your process ends in a signature, Box free does more useful work than a bigger, dumber drive. If your files are media, it cannot hold them at all.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is Box free really 10GB?**
Yes for the Individual plan, but uploads are limited to 250MB per file regardless of remaining space.

**Why did my Box upload fail?**
The file was almost certainly larger than 250MB. That is a per-file cap, not a total-space cap.

**Can I get more than 10GB free?**
No. Box does not offer referral or bonus storage on the individual free tier.

**Do I get e-signatures on Box free?**
Yes, 5 requests per month. Personal Pro raises it to 15.

**Is Box good for personal photo storage?**
No. The per-file limit and the document-first design make it a poor fit for media libraries.
