- Description: Free gets you the whole vault, every device and hardware-key 2FA. Premium adds three things people miss: built-in TOTP codes, file attachments and vault health reports.

**Bitwarden Free costs $0 and includes unlimited passwords, notes and cards on unlimited devices and apps, a password generator, passkey storage, encrypted export, self-hosting, hardware-key two-step login, text-only Send and a free organization shared with one other user. Premium is $19.80 a year and adds built-in TOTP, attachments and health reports.**[1](#sources)

Third-party guides disagree about this plan in ways that are easy to disprove. Some quote Premium at $10 a year, which was the price before the 2026 increase. Others claim free is limited to two devices, which Bitwarden has never stated on its own pricing page.

The vendor page says unlimited devices and unlimited passwords, in those words, and prices Premium at $1.65 a month billed annually. Both figures are worth checking yourself before you rely on a review.[2](#sources)

## What the free plan actually includes

| ----------------------- | --------------------------- | --------------------------- |
| Price | $0 | $19.80/yr, $1.65/mo |
| Passwords, notes, cards | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Devices and apps | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Password generator | Yes | Yes |
| Passkey storage | Yes | Yes |
| Two-step login | Key, authenticator or email | Adds Yubico OTP and Duo |
| Built-in TOTP codes | No | Yes |
| File attachments | No | 5GB, expandable |
| Vault health reports | No | Yes |
| Emergency access | No | Yes |
| Bitwarden Send | Text only | Text and files |
| Shared organization | 1 other user, 2 collections | 1 other user, 2 collections |

The organization row catches people out. Premium does not add sharing. Sharing comes from creating a free organization, which any account on any plan can do, and which holds two people and two collections.

## Hardware keys are free, which surprises people

Two-step login on the free plan accepts a hardware security key, an authenticator app or email. That means a YubiKey using FIDO2 works without paying, as does any TOTP authenticator app.

What Premium adds is the older Yubico OTP protocol and Duo. For most people this distinction is invisible, because the modern key standard is already on free.

So a genuinely strong setup, hardware key plus password manager, costs nothing. That is unusual in this category and it is the strongest argument for Bitwarden on a budget.

## The three things Premium actually adds

Built-in TOTP first. Premium can generate and store six-digit codes inside the vault, so a login is one item rather than an item plus a separate authenticator.

Convenient, and worth a caveat: storing the second factor next to the password weakens the second factor. If someone gets into your vault they get both halves. Many security people deliberately keep them separate, which means paying for Premium TOTP and then choosing not to use it.

File attachments second, 5GB and expandable. Useful for scans of identity documents, recovery codes and software licences that you want encrypted in the same place as your logins.

Vault health reports third, which flag weak, reused and exposed passwords. This is the feature most likely to change behaviour, because it turns an abstract worry into a list.

Emergency access is the fourth, and the one people miss until it matters. It lets a nominated contact request your vault after a waiting period you set.

## Families is the better deal for two people

Premium is $19.80 a year for one account. Families is $47.88 a year for six accounts, all with Premium features, plus unlimited sharing and unlimited collections.

That is $2.40 a year more than two Premium subscriptions, for six seats. If two people in a household are both considering Premium, Families is the purchase.

## When the free plan is enough

Anyone whose second factor already lives in a separate authenticator app. Which is most people who have thought about it, and describes the recommended setup rather than a compromise.

Also enough for anyone who wants the vault and nothing else: unlimited entries, unlimited devices, browser and mobile apps, passkeys, encrypted export and self-hosting, which very few password managers allow at any price. [Signal](https://efreedirectory.com/signal-free-plan-limits/) takes the same position on messaging, giving away the whole product and charging only for storage.

## When the free plan stops being enough

When you need to store a document rather than a string, when you want the health report, or when you want emergency access for a partner or family member.

At $19.80 a year, the decision is less about cost than about whether those four features matter. Bitwarden and [Proton Mail's free plan](https://efreedirectory.com/proton-mail-free-plan-limits/) make the same bet: the secure core is free and the paid tier is convenience, which is why both remain usable indefinitely without paying.
